Well done on all the scything Cheery! I've been clearing the long grass that collapsed in the wind/rain using what I thought was a billhook but is apparently a 'hand scythe'. Rather a lot of bending and at times more hacking than cutting. But I did at least get several bags filled before the garden waste collection this morning. It'll need cutting shorter before I can mow it, but I'm trying to avoid strimming as it leaves so much behind that it keeps the grass healthy and the wildflowers don't get a chance.7

Gosh that sounds like hard work greenbee! Well done!!
Yes I'm definitely more of a Barbara 😂😂😂 and no, I won't be marching down to the council offices to demand a refund (impressed that you did RT!!) I think our lack of glass collection (and food waste, which everyone else also gets but we don't) is probably offset by the fact that they have to send a special little van out to us and about 12 other houses in the county once a week 😂😂 It's not like they're doing lots of other houses nearby either - they can get to most of our neighbours with the big truck.
Hey ho. I confess I did do lots of reporting and stripping when we first moved in and they insisted I had to buy several wheelie bins, and only after a couple months of missed collections and complaints did they realise we were meant to be on the special round... 🙄 but since then it's been fine!
Nowt to report today. Did a bit of scything before work, and now getting very fed up and stiff sitting in this chair. Roll on the end of the day I say - although I've got plenty to do before then!10 -
Well, what a lovely day!
I started with a bit of scything, then a cup of tea in a friend's garden at 9am. Tried to nip to a local market town for supplies for Mr Cheery's birthday, but let me tell you, national park market towns are NOT the place to be on a hot summer lunchtime at the best of times, let alone in these weird times 😮😮 there was a queue at the petrol station so I didn't bother, but I did buy a hay fork at the farm supply shop 😂 yes, we have one without a handle, but a brief conversation this morning led me to believe it wouldn't acquire a handle any time soon... and if it does, well then that's a bonus.
Then I tried to park. There was a diversion round my usual free space, so I tried the pay and display, but short term was full and they wanted £4.50 in the long term one, and there was a queue, and they only took cash, and I didn't enough so I left.
VERY glad I did as I drove back through the centre of town and it was PACKED. Shouldn't have been surprised but still, not seen anywhere look like that for a while 🙄
Anyway, going to sneak off to a less popular, less touristy town on Monday morning.
Used my hay fork to turn over all the hay I've cut, so I should be able to bale some of it tomorrow before the thunderstorms in the week.
Friends came round after that and we had a LOVELY afternoon. They brought their travel hammock - something I have only dimly been aware of before but it is BRILLIANT. We have the perfect hammock trees so need to investigate options...10 -
Sounds like a lovely day Cheery! Well done avoiding the crowds too.Mortgage free 16/06/2023! £132,500 cleared in 11 years, 3 months and 7 days

Was indeed a lovely day!
Don't know what's happened to the weather today... It was meant to be another hot one, but it was so misty this morning I had to leave the chickens in the run, and it's still not warmed up yet.
Still, having a productive day so far. Nipped to the tip to take the car full of bottles - Mr Cheery has acquired an oak kitchen unit from Freegle (hooray!) which will only fit in that car, so that's empty now. Then we had a cuppa in the cafe, and I did some thinking about the veg plot next year (I know it seems early, but each year I seem to get taken by surprise!)
Home now, and I've paid the veg box invoice, written a quick blog post, and done banks/YNAB - all looking ok in there, and I've put £300 into long term savings so that's good.
It did get me thinking though... I don't really have an financial goals this year. I'm taking part in a mortgage challenge on here but I wasn't very ambitious in my overpayment target so it doesn't feel like much of a stretch. We ARE overpaying though - £80 a month at the minute, so that'll add up over the year. Hmm, will have a think...6 -
Well, I still don't have any financial goals... but I do have four bales of hay in the shed! Hooray! Gosh I'm tired though. And while it seemed like an absolute mountain of hay, it's not even half of what I've already cut (the rest isn't dry enough yet), and what I've cut is probably about a tenth of the field 😮😮
Hey ho. I'm made some hay while the sun shone, and the rest will have to take its chances with the thunderstorms, and I'll try again next weekend. I can cut while it's raining, but obviously it won't dry very well...
Still, four bales is great - we only made seven in total last year!
Just running a much-needed hot bath...11 -
I think you’ve done an amazing job cheery! Hey making sounds like a v time consuming job! I hope you enjoyed your well earned bath and cuppa.I know what you mean about towns being busy, everywhere I go there seems to be masses of people wandering about!I hope you manage to nip out today and grab what you need. Have a lovely day.10
