Pyxis, that is a good question! I joined an ancient (non MSE) forum about 17 years ago (!) - never been on such a thing before and the woman who joined just before me had a flower as her avatar, so I made mine a daffodil, as I happened to have a picture of one handy, and called myself some variation of Cheery Daff or something (can't even remember now).
Joined MSE and used a similar name, but it was actually a picture of me for a long time (although so tiny you couldn't tell). Then MSE made us all rejoin and I decided I needed a new picture, and I had one of a sunflower 😂
So basically no reason, this has just been my name for so long that I don't even associate it with daffodils any more - and you lot call me Cheery anyway 😂8 -

The blackbird is my favourite bird. I love its song, and its appearance.
I have had different blackbird avatars...For a couple of years, I changed them four times a year to suit the seasons.
This one is really the Spring one, but I like it best of all, so will keep it all year.
I've some pictures of pyxides, but can't remember if I've ever used one as an avatar. I think I did once.(I just lurve spiders!)

I don't know how long you've been here, but if it's yonks, you might remember a programme called The Good Old Days, which was a weekly variety show in the style of the old music hall tradition from the turn of the (19th) century.
There was a famous compère, Leonard Sachs, who would introduce each act with a verbose description filled with the most complicated and long-winded words, many of which I'd never heard before, accompanied by lots of flourishes of a gavel, and the audience would oooh! after each set of elaborate words.
