Methinks your son should be grounded and carry out lots of household chores until his bill is paid off, perhaps he could get a Saturday job - that should not only keep him out of mischief but the money he earns should be given to you towards his bill.

He has to learn that running up large bills have a consequence. Also, I would give him some paper, a pen, an envelope and perhaps a second class stamp to encourage him to write to his g/f rather than spending hours on the phone.

Sorry op, but it should be Orange that hold you partly responsible for the whole incident, not the other way around. Buying your son a contract mobile on a contract in your name was always going to end in trouble and you should have thought about it before.

Kids have very little sense of the value of things so it was a big bill waiting to happen and now it has, moaning about it will get you nowhere, fraid you'll have to pay up!!

These days various things have warnings written on them so why should this not also apply to the phone industry. On my virgin payg, which is on direct debit, I have a limit so surely this should happen to contracts?

    He is only 15.

My point is that surely they could see a adverse usage on the phone and then contacted me,as per visa cards,to check that i knew that the account was being used correctly

To be fair, why would they? If someone loses possession of their phone, they usually call and get it barred... It's not unusual for someones phone usage to vary month on month...

If you're usuing the "Orange should have been more responsible" line, then you are leaving yourself open to the same comment... I mean, who really thinks a mobile is like a land line and you can but the phone down every 59 minutes and recall and not get charged...

Take it as a life lesson for you both.

Can you not check the account online? I have a t-mobile contract phone for my daughter, it costs me £15 per month but gives her a £34 allowance to use on calls or texts and she knows not to go over the allowance unless it's an emergency. I'm the one who is responsible for the bill so I check online every evening to see how much of her allowance she has left. At least if you check every day it would stop the bill from getting so high.

  • i know its no use to you now but i know t-mobile do (did) a tarrif where you paid x pounds per month and you got x mins and x texts free after that you couldn't use it unless you physically paid for a top up voucher.

Surley this would be a better plan for the future?

Well thanks for all your replies.
I now know that i will have to fork out the whole bill, and yes it is a lesson learned the hard way.
Even though he is only 15 he will pay back every last penny of it no matter how long it takes him.

    Cheers

just a quick thought, why didn't you take action after the first bill of 300£ and let him spend another 800£?
