My dad was a miner as were all his brothers and his father. Aswell as the 1 hour walk to work he had he also had to walk another 3 miles or so underground and of course wasn't paid until his shovel hit coal.

My Mums dad was killed in the Gresford disaster in 1934 altogether 234 miners died most were left under ground. Very hard days and they were determined my two brothers didn't follow on down there.

Brings back alot of memories even from my childhood in the 50`s.

  • Just spotted that it's on BBC2 tomorrow at 18:05. Have set it to record!

  • I live in Blaenavon & it's great seeing the places you're used to transported back in time. My grandparent used to live in Engine Row which is opposite Stack Square where the families are staying. Plus the butcher & grocer are the ones from our town so it's funny seeing them on the tv also.

If you time it right, you can see the children walking from school or the men coming home from work. The pub they were in the other night was called the Whistle & I know a few people who've gone there to watch the men walking home from work as they pass it everyday.

I'm totally hooked on the show & I think the Griffithses are fab! They seem to be really enjoying the experience! The others have embraced it well as well.
  • It's a wonderful programme and should be shown at a time when more people will see it. It's a great reminder of how lucky we are today.
  • I absolutely love it - brilliant, brilliant piece of television.
  • i am totally hooked on this programme..... i think mainly because of the griffiths family.. they make me laugh...lol.....

but on a serious note..... it does bring home to you ....how luck we are with all our mod cons that we take for granted.....

i bought a new washing machine in july, and it has broken down again.. and the engineer is coming out again on wednesday.... and i am cursing about not having a washing machine...... ( if it goes wrong again it is going back to the shop to be exchanged )

the thought of washing all my washing by hand

and the thought of not being able to afford even basics... like bread and milk.... it doesnt bare thinking about....

i personally think it should be longer than 3 weeks.....as lets face it 'roughing it' ( by todays standard of living ) for 3 weeks is could be done..... as you know you are going back to your own home.. with all the creature comforts..... where if it was for say 3 months..... and for it to include christmas.. would put a whole new insight into living in the 1920's

back to the griffiths... did you see debbie with the rabbit..:rotfl: :rotfl: especially when she was just outside her front door holding it.....

I remember this being an Old Style must-see for some and a couldn't-see for others so thought it was worth mentioning.

It's one of those 1900 House type programmes where they chose some families to lgo back in time and live the life of Welsh mining families. Tonight BBC4 11.30pm for an hour - two episodes.
