I'll try to watch this - my grandad was a miner in Wales around that time. It would be interesting to see how they lived.
I admit I'm a sucker for these shows - I was glued to "The 1900 House" ! I tried to watch "The 1940's House" but I got annoyed because the family were so whiny and useless. I'd love to volunteer to be on such a show but my family would run away from home if I suggested it0 -
Hi
I just wondered is anyone following "The Coalhouse" on BBC1 its about three familys going back to 1927 and their struggles with everyday life. The men have to experience working down the pit whilst the women struggle with the everyday chores their only source of heating and cooking being an old open fire range and have to budget on a pittance of pay the bulk of which goes to pay the rent. It really brings home how easy we have it today.0 -

Hi moneyowen,
There's a thread already running about the Coalhouse so I've merged your thread with it to keep all the replies together.

Hi
Sorry I didn't realise there was another thread must have missed it0 -
What comes over to me is how grindingly repressive life was.......& why us children having a career was so important to my parents.
We (3 girls) used to get the strap at home if there was any hint of laziness in our school reports ("saved me hours of explanation" said dad with his usual wit & glint in the eye!); but considering that the late 20's & 30's were only a couple of decades behind, I can understand our parents fear.
In some ways perhaps the UK is now slipping back further back in the fear driven society stakes?
On a lighter note, I do like that plain white apron with black edging that one of them wears:D0 -
I took the men an hour and a half to walk to work sometimes only to be told there was no work - really hard times.Women and cats will do as they please and men and dogs should get used to it.;)
Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting a few drops on yourself.
