  • a 'scammer' wouldn't give a single penny back. Anyway, congrats on bullying your wife into cancelling her subscription because you decided it was a waste of money.

You make your point but where was the card processors email confirmation when the debit card was used? Even if she had made a mistake this confirmation would or should have been evident. Her bank account showed that bluesnap.com had processed the debit card payment. Why no email from them with an attached invoice as was the case when her credit card had been used.
Possibly in the spam folder, sometimes that happens. Maybe it was deleted by mistake
The difficulty for myheritage.com is they may have been spoofed. These online scammers usually nibble at a card to see if they get away with it. If nothing happens then they go for a much bigger bite the important thing is to making your card provider aware that you have been nibbled at as soon as possible.
The FLAW in this argument is that they have refunded the payment! If your wife had been fooled by a spoofed MH scam, then you would not have got a refund - yes a refund for the credit card transaction, but not for the debit card scammed since they won't have received any payment. They are not simply going to refund you money they never received!
What you are aware of is that your email address is often given to third parties who use it to spam your inbox but what you may not be aware of is that by law ISP have to capture the web sites you visit which profiles you. Google and other do the same if your browser privacy settings are not tweaked. They push onto you commercial material that might lead you to purchase something.
So are you saying your wife DID make two purchases, but one was in error because google or someone pushed her onto the myheritage account and lead her to purchase something.
The profile data kept by your ISP, the URL's you visit, is far more valuable to scammers. If they can spoof somebody you have dealt with then their chances of success are greatly increased. This is what may have happened here with myheritage.com they may be as much a victim as my wife.
so ... did the scammers take your wife's money and pay it all to myheritage and keep nothing themselves, or they kept the whole money and myheritage are simply refunding you out of their own money because you had a rant at them?
As for flogging a dead horse it remains to be seen as to whether her credit card refund will appear as for her debit card use her bank will to need to take it on board if that payment is not recovered.
No, but you do seem to want to accept any position save one where your wife is at fault

I hope you treat your own wife better than you treat mine.

I hope my wife feels she could tell me the truth, accidentally paid for a second subscription, etc rather than an elaborate story.:D
  • I received a "payment declined" alert on a prepaid credit card which I use where I have doubts about an organisation or simply don't want it taking money on a regular basis (claiming for example that I had failed to cancel). I maintain a balance below £25 so that I can use it for small amounts without worrying and if I want to make larger payments, I transfer money to it.
The declined payment was for £204.46 to bls*myheritage and obviously it failed. As soon as I saw it I cancelled the card and a new one is on its way. A year earlier I had made a payment to My Heritage for two DNA tests (at around £76). I also made a payment of around £7 to Findmypast.co.uk which I think may be linked.

I phoned MyHeritage and they denied ever making a payment request. Clicking on my card statement brought up the same postcode as the one mentioned in the first post in this thread. On checking online, I discover that MyHeritage had a data breach affecting 92 million people worldwide although they claim that credit card and password information was not breached. Whatever the circumstances, I feel I was right only to use a prepaid card in the first place and to keep a small balance on it.

This is the first time I have had a scamming experience of this type and I'm glad I opted for prepaid.
  • Oh, and before anyone criticises her, I don't have a wife.

If it were stolen credit card information, the purchase attempt would not have come from them. Only their payment processor would be able to do that and the hacker would need to have access to it, which is obviously not the case.

In addition, a hacker would make purchases using a stolen card or other material gain, not use it on MyHeritage. In the extremely unlikely event that a hacker was using a payment processor and spoofed the company name when making charges, then you would be able to report it, but the card provider should be able to clear it up for you.

These are almost certainly charges that are pre-agreed and prescribed but forgotten about down the line. There is nothing sinister about it nor worth dragging up this thread over.

I take it your second unrelated card was also charged too?

First and last time hopefully. I use two prepaid cards: a Virgin Money Sterling card and a FairFX Dollar card. From memory the Virgin card has a paid renewal whilst for the other card renewal is free if asked for 3 months prior to end date. At the moment FairFX are offering a free Sterling card presumably on the same renewal terms. My wife sends her regards to all. The checks in the post.
