OP, I can tell you quite a bit about older Audi's - bought one at 166k, 53 plate.

Had it about 5 years now, nearly up to 200k. Came with a stack of dealer servicing history and then independents, missing about 2 years servicing docs so I assumed nothing has been done in that time.

What goes wrong, so many bits to be frank, front suspension is a minefield, if it hasn't been rebuilt expect it will need it. Usual stuff, needed a set of shocks to be right, power steering flush, rear calipers seize, turbo's, electric window regulators fail, plenum drains block causing water ingress in to the cabin, cat flexi fails over the years.....

There's more but you get the idea. I wouldn't buy one way too complicated.

If you are 6' 6" I think you may have difficulty finding a truly "fun" car!

I have realised this - I'm going for more sensible probably with an FSI Golf I'm hoping to test drive tomorrow - cheap and cheerful :)

I know this is off topic (not a fun car I think!) but I was surprised a few years ago looking at an Octavia. My BiL is tall and my wife said a new car had to accommodate him comfortably. The young salesman was tall (I asked him and he said 6' 6"). I said "Get in the front passenger seat, put it as far back as you need to be comfortable, and then get in behind it". I was amazed - he had a good 6" of knee clearance and loads of headroom - both in the front seat and back.

Maybe it's not off topic. Octavia VRS (is that the one?) might be an option, especially if you have tall relatives too. I'm sure the other posters on this thread will scoff at the idea! Performance but not much (open top?) fun.

Yes. I've been driven in one but found it a bit scary (fortunately the driver knew what he was doing!).

I'm not sure a "performance" car necessarily equals a "fun" car, especially with a limited budget. Also if buying something like a "Type R", how do you know how it's been driven? To within an inch of its life?
