Yep MX5 would probably be the best shout. You might get into an early Z4 for that kind of money, probably a 2.2 or 2.5 but still fun. Alfa GTV?

Another vote for MX5. I bought one as a 70th birthday present to myself two years ago and am very impressed with its handling and overall driving experience. It's fun to drive, though not especially fast (mine is a 1.6; the 1.8 and 2.0 litre models are obviously quicker). Spares are cheap enough and they're easy to service They are subject to body rot, but this is usually treatable. There are loads around, and I would advise having one either with a power top or detachable GRP roof if you intend to use it year round.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • I guess I'll take a definite look at an MX5 then! And maybe an early Z4 too. I like the buy for £1k and keep £2k for repairs!

    Cheers all :)

Say £3,000 for the stupid car! 10 miles of country lanes to work each day, and then short hops at the weekend!

Another vote for MX5 then. At that price point i'd be looking for a clean mk2.5 (google the differences) and ideally a 1.8i or 1.8iS

Fantastic cars. Watch for rot particularly on the sills and bulk head but otherwise great cars. I've had four so far.

Clio 182 is another great car for Fun.

Puma 1.7 if you can find one thats not rotten. Can only go up in value if you keep it rot free.

MINI Cooper S is another great car. Watch for oil leaks, gearbox issues and steering rack issues at that price point.

Possibly a Z4 but IMHO they need the bigger engines before they are Fun.

Theres days £1,000 on an MX5 might buy you a hidden gem, but likewise could buy you something thats close to a basket case. I'd personally spend the extra and get a good one up front.

Actually a mk3 MX5 would be in budget. Maybe not just as much fun as the earlier cars, but a fresher looking car.

Focus ST170 well in budget too.

Also - and heres a left field one that is destined to go UP in value - a BMW 325ti Compact. Fantastic cars.
  • I'm not particularly a car fan (we've mostly had exceptionally boring cars) but I do like the MX5. Several of my friends have them and they're certainly great cars to be driven in. One of my former bosses has one as his fun car and I think my wife wants to get one when she retires.

I think they're a great looking car too (always remind me of a Lotus Elan). Although I don't like the looks of the latest model. Why fix it if it ain't broke?

(Ps - another former boss has some kind of Mercedes Brabus as his fun car. It's mental!)

...because he wants to spend his time driving it, not repairing it? :)
