To redress the balance I think a Mk1 TT is a good shout. They are as low as they will go. Keep it in good nick and it won't cost you anything. Haven't said that, it will be the same for lots of the cars mentioned above. Like it or lump it, I believe the Mk1 TT will be a future design classic, regardless of peoples opinion on how much fun they are. Personally, if it was me I'd want to spend a bit more and go for a later V6. It's also worth saying, I've got an aversion to anything far eastern, but that's just me. I think they are soulless. For the record I've driven neither and I suspect many in this thread haven't either.

Mk1 TT is fun in a straight line, especially the V6 will sound good. Just no feel in the steering.
Alternative? Mazda RX8. DO NOT just go and buy one. DO research. DO NOT listen to pub gossip. DO buy a 231bhp instead of a 190. Stick to pre-April 2006 for the cheaper tax.

Lots of advice on the MX 5 here: https://www.mx5oc.co.uk/
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
  • I wouldn't recommend a Mazda RX8 to anyone. Very poor mpg, oil top up every week, any engine problems will probably right off the car. Other than that, they can be good cars.

Actually a mk3 MX5 would be in budget. Maybe not just as much fun as the earlier cars, but a fresher looking car.

I have a MK3, neighbour has a MK1. I prefer the MK3, much roomier inside. Again check for rust in the same places you would on a MK1/2 because they go in the same places if its been like mine and spent its life at the seaside.

If you get one and you're anywhere within an hour or two of Sheffield get it booked into Roddisons for a full alignment. Paul Roddison races them and can set them up to any road type you like. Mine is optimised for B road blasting and I lose bottle long before it loses grip. Paul will also suggest tyres to use. The MX5 is very tyre sensitive, it was worse than my Ford Capri on the Bridgestones it came with, I changed to the Kumho KU39 Paul suggested and it was like night and day. If you're down south WIM (Wheels in Motion) or Scuzzle Motorsport are the go to guys.

As for parts, the MK3 uses a lot of Ford parts to the point you can do a direct engine swap from a 2L Ford Focus or even a 2.5L one if you swap a couple of pulleys over and slightly modify the inlet manifold. This makes it dirt cheap to run. When my thermostat went I got one for a 2L Focus, it was half the price of the Mazda one and identical save the logo on the part.

Another recommendation for an mx-5. I have a 2011 mk3.5 in my garage at the moment.
  • Thank you all for your input.

I'm definitely going to test drive both cars. I do some long driving, and from what I've read the TT is more practical than the MX5, but lacks in feedback and fun-ness.

I've got lots of things to consider and some time yet!

Mileage on any car these days is immaterial. At 17 years, it's probably been clocked at some time. MOT's only started recording mileage about 10 years ago so you won't be able to verify that it's correct.

I think that's a bit of an OTT statement, clocking does happen as I've found myself but I don't think it's the majority of cars that it happens to and there are still plenty of ways to check mileage from before 2006.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Thank you. Just looking out for signs it’s been well maintained and looked after?

A folder full of receipts and as few owners as possible will be a better indication that its been looked after.

None of which really matter if its a weekend car.
