when you've moved into a new place as a homeowner or tenant, what have the previous occupants left behind, and did you put any of it to good use or make any money from it?
Our last sellers (with our permission) didn't take much of their stuff away, as they had no transport and removing what was not needed or couldn't be stored would have cost them money they didn't have. We on the other hand have a slick way of clearing out houses. Hence we simply suggested they take what they needed and lock the door behind them. This is basically what they did and we were not unhappy with that.
We were left with:
Settee and armchair - went straight to the tip after we sliced the bottom off for loose change.
Veneered Dining table - still have and want to give away on Freecycle - any takers here??
Small occasional table - to freecycle I think. I keep overlooking the damn thing!
Double pine bed - Mattress chucked and bed Freecycled
Single Pine bed - ditto
Single metal framed bed - mattress chucked but bed base cleaned and kept as is in VGC.
Painted utility wardrobe and chest of drawers - successfully freecycled.
Rustic pine cupboard and coffee table - will be kept.
Cooker, washing machine and microwave - taken to scrapyard and weighed in at £7
Fridge freezer - tip
TV working - given to friend
Various boxes in loft - to go out for recycling
Computer monitor and scanners - tip and freecycle
Plastic storage boxes x 5 - kept for my use, I've been looking for some of these for months!
Gardening tools
Beswick siamese cat damaged - probably e bay
Bone china vase - ditto
2 sectional ladder - I'll use this myself
..and more but I'm losing the will to live
Oh yes, there was a cuddly toy at the end - but our dog got there first :rotfl:
Previously I have bought a house from a retired carpenter and he left all his tools for me. There were some lovely old tools there such as woodturning chisels etc. I still have all of these. Again this chap didn't have access to transport, so I informed the EA that effects left behind were not an issue for me. I think this elderly gent was appreciative of that and he made sure his tools were put away tidily. When I took possession I checked around the house and shed etc and phoned the EA to tell him that the seller's tools had been left, and how could we get them to him. I was told that he had left them for me, as I probably had more use for them that he did now. The kind thougt did bring a tear to my eye I must admit.

I used to buy a lot of investment property. Popped in to inspect one of the properties after completion and came across a tarantula spider clinging to a bedroom curtain!!! Poor thing had been dead a while. My sons loved it!!!!0

I sold the floor tiles from this house on ebay. They made £1000! Sold bath, chimney pots, fire surround and exchanged the cooker for some scaffolding.
Bad thing was about the tiles, we've ripped them up from three houses. One lot went in the garden to edge the lawn (made use of them at least!) and the second lot I gave away on freecycle  No wonder they were so popular! never again!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

great to read such a positive post
My parents moved into a house when I was about 13 and it had loads of retro phones.
I had a beatiful slimphone, and it broke in many a subsequent move. Id love one again. So if anyone finds one- it was turquoise let me know! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I sold 2 of those old Crittal steel windows that we took out of one house plus the bath and toilet from that house.
The toilet (old pan only) went to an architectural salvage dealer. That was easy money really but the bath and the windows went to some chap building his own garage and needing a replacement cast iron bath for his bathroom.
Another chap bought a calor gas water heater from the same house and someone else bought some larder doors, also from the same house. One had been attacked by rats at some stage! He still bought them.
We also found an enamel advertising sign 5 ft long covering up a hole in the upstairs floorboards. It advertised Colemans Bluewash. We've still got that.Behind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0 -
My H threw 'gave' one of those old Post Office telephones to the men at the dump. I could kill him sometimes.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

We came accross one such telephone at my mum's house when we cleared it out. I checked it on e bay but they weren't selling for much. I think it went to the auction house that sold most of her stuff off for us. I don't remember it going for muchBehind every great man is a good womanBeside this ordinary man is a great woman£2 savings jar - now at £3.42:rotfl:0

The flat that we are renting was supposed to be unfurnished but when we got here there was a dark oak Art Deco table and some retro chairs. I put the table on ebay since its not really practical for us and the chairs are exactly my style and will probably take them with us to our next place although the table protective rubber feet keep making a nasty mark on the floor tiles. There was also a couple of tatty beds which we asked our LA to have removed.0
