A selective look back at MSE's history.
No mention of Martin Lewis's terrible advice to people to put their savings with dodgy Icelandic banks.0 -
To celebrate, can we dig up and post our favourite or funniest thread on MSE?0

I!!!8217;m grateful. Saved me a few quid over the years.
I remember reading Martin's money tips in the Observer, too.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I must agree. This site has saved me a lot of money over the years too. Mainly the forums though. And of course Martin Lewis did pretty well out of it too.0

I don't think that I've ever used the main site but I have had quite a few good tips from the Forums even before I actually joined.0

No mention of Martin Lewis's terrible advice to people to put their savings with dodgy Icelandic banks.
1 April 2008 ML Icesave: how safe are your savings? Facts and myths
7 October 2008 The Guardian Icesave freezes deposits and withdrawals
7 October 2008 ML Icesave… angry, frustrated and upset… "Icesave, of course, has been recommended many times on this site, after all, it’s a UK regulated bank which had great rates. Yet for the last seven months, every note on the site that mentions Icesave has included a large WARNING, explaining it’s not protected like other banks due to the ‘passport exemption’ system, plus an explanation of the (then) £35,000 limit and what it means, and a big link to the spread your savings guide and last april’s Icesave: is it safe? blog."
25 November 2008 Date I applied for FSCS compensation on Icesave site, which included interest accrued until 7 October
1 December 2008 Date I received the FSCS money
10 December 2008 Date on my Icesave ISA reinstatement certificate
13 January 2016 The Guardian Britain has been fully reimbursed for Icesave bank collapse, Iceland says
About seven weeks from failure to all money repaid. It's gotten faster since then and the ringfencing changes that are happening now should normally mean hours or less loss of service when in place.
I think it remains MSE policy to give the best rates and add cautions as seems necessary, like the poor customer service warning on the current cheapest energy supplier.0 -
Congratulations to Martin Lewis and all of the team!
OK, it's not quite as much the 'personal' site that it was in the early days, but it's still saved, or made me, many thousands of pounds over the years, which it's very unlikely I'd have been able to accomplish without it. The forums are also, of course, very helpful and informative, as well as being a good platform for the discussion of day to day topics, both money saving and general. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society, where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar: I love not man the less, but Nature more...0 -
