NO DRINKING in rental property - legal or not?

  • It's not as shamelessly overt as "No Irish, No Blacks" but it is on the same page.

That's the phrase I had in mind - and this is even worse...

Hang on, aren't you presuming rather a lot here?

You seem to be talking about 'us,' as though the advertiser isn't one of 'us' and it can't be their country too.

We know nothing about them or where they are naturalised.

Is this where they come on and say - "I'm English and I converted"?

(I'm assuming this is in one of the larger English cities - but it could be in another British city obviously...).

Islam is a religion not a race.

The advert might not even have anything to do with the landlord's religious beliefs, it could be down to some other reason such as a clause in the lease or deeds.
  • OP said the advert states it's near mosques and it would appear the advertiser wants people to take these two sentences together in their advert.

Obviously there are some British people that have converted to Islam (think Cherie Blair's sister did so??) - though I haven't come across any personally.

Islam isn't a nationality.... You don't give up citizenship!

You're too eager to be offended.
  • Obviously one doesn't give up nationality - which I presume you know yourself:cool:

But Islam (with or without drinking) is not our way of life - which I presume you also know.

The advert is saying "No-one with our way of life to apply" (if not phrased in those words) - which I presume you also know.

    :cool::cool::cool:

Right - now my own wooden spoons are kept for cooking with personally....

There is a Buddhist centre in my city, they offer accommodation, their rules say no TVs. Neither situation is racist. Your right to poison yourself is not a protected characteristic.

Don't worry, I'm sure your copy of the BF newsletter is on the way - plenty of opportunity to get offended there

wow, goes to show you find bigots everywhere, and dont assume you speak for anyone, you certainly don't speak for me (a white english male).

You've never met a person who was born in Britain and also Muslim???

People of the Islamic faith have been living here for generations, and the ones born here, and their children born here, are as British as you and me.

Not all Muslims don't drink. Not all British people of other/no religions drink - there are plenty who do not for all kinds of health reasons. "Our way of life" does not automatically equal drinking alcohol.

You certainly do not speak for me.

I think MITSTM has a point about the veiled racism. How many white people are moslems? Then again, unless you were, why the hell would you want to live anywhere near a mosque anyway? To be woken up at 5am or whenever it is? Knickers to that.

I lived for a year in Whitechapel between the big East London mosque and a Catholic church. After a few weeks I completely tuned out the call to prayer unless I was listening out for it, and it never woke me. The church bell (a single one, not a peal) was far more intrusive especially as it wasn't predictable.
