I have seen flats advertised to let with the restrictions of No Drinking. Is this legal?

Legal, yes.I was a DFW, now I'm a MFW :T0

....enforceable.... probably not0

Totally unenforceable, but I'm not aware of anything in law to say you can't have such a clause.
Is there any stated reason why the LL doesn't want drinking in the property e.g. personal / religious belief, not wanting parties, previous problems with alcoholic tenants?
I would, however, probably avoid the property on the grounds that the LL is showing an unhealthy level of interest in what goes on in the property and may start demanding frequent inspections or similar to prove that the 'rules' haven't been broken.0 -
I suspect it's religious as the advert states that it is within walking distance of mosques and madaresas.AvocadosBeforeMortgages wrote: »Totally unenforceable, but I'm not aware of anything in law to say you can't have such a clause.

On what grounds would it not be legal?0

Tenancy law requires that tenants be given 'quiet enjoyment' of the property. So you can't tell them what to do unless it would interfere with others or put unfair wear and tear on the property.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Totally legal.
There are also government buildings that have no alcohol clauses in their leases due to finance for them being supplied via an Islamic bank.0 -
How would they ever know........ wonder if they plan to check the glass recycling box:think:0
