I'd have had more time for Waitrose if they had been upfront and said they were scrapping the PYO offers because it was losing them money fair enough but to scrap it by implying their customers were too dense to understand the offer.....well.
  • I can see why they chose now to launch as John Lewis & Partners, because they knew the Partners themselves would be !!!!ed off no end to find out that their annual dividend (or profit share or whatever) would be just short of fifteen whole quid come next March - if they're lucky *

(* back of fag packet calculation of £1.2m profit divided by 85,000 staff)

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

And that's already being reflected in the way staff deal with customers - it's light years away from the excellence that prevailed a few years back.

Unfortunately the worse it gets, the more defect to Aldi/Lidl and Amazon and it's a vicious circle. There's only one likely outcome to all this, and it isn't a good one.

    Yes I agree.

Especially by the management who sometimes act like they are doing you a favour just by being there!

Granted the removal of its absurdly cumbersome scheme was badly handled, my real beef with the one Waitrose I occasionally use is that they have become so obsessed with self checkouts that they barely bother to staff the traditional type - and I refuse to use the former.

The result is that the two or three proper checkouts they still use have lengthy queues of frustrated shoppers standing there tapping their feet.

Waitrose's 'partners' need to rise up and sack their managers. They are utterly incompetent.
  • Must say, for balance I can't really fault the staff in our Sheffield branch, and I can't really discern any fall in standards of service

Clearly they got the hint when I ignored their "£4 off a £40 spend" vouchers as they have now sent me six "£5 off a £50 spend" vouchers (and nothing else).

I'm going to stop scanning in my card (I said that last time but I found myself carrying on doing it out of habit - I'll actually take it off my keyring this time) and see if that makes any difference. Even if it doesn't, at least I shall have the satisfaction of knowing that they aren't getting any data on my shopping habits in return for the absolutely eff all that they're giving me for providing it!

I'm still receiving the £8 off £40 vouchers every month - but presumably because their systems have recognised that it's the only thing that will get me in there.

Even the 20% discount that they bring, though, isn't enough to counter the huge price difference between Aldi and Waitrose - some Waitrose prices are just plain silly, and the rest are just high.

Still, there's always the free Guardian to be had. :)
