Football game for children

Options
Hi My son is 8 and I am looking to get him a football based PC game such as PES rather than football manager. Is this game suitable? I would look at an older version first for about £10 rather than buy the latest.

Any advice appreciated.

PES has a pegi rating of 3 years old so should be fine content wise for your son - although I believe there are online features so you may want to disable/supervise those if possible.

As for under £10....cdkeys have pes 2017 for £5.49. Link here if you want it:

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

I'd suggest an older version of FIFA if he's a football fan. Fifa has the licenses for clubs and players. Even the older versions will have players he recognises, and the clubs obviously. PES has very few club licenses so some clubs are known by different names, especially non city named teams e.g. Arsenal = North London, Everton = Merseyside Blue. You can faff about and change the names but it is a real faff. A lot of the players have their names changed too. I'd suggest Fifa 16 or 17, although the last good version of Fifa was 14 (imo). The menu's and appearance are better in Fifa although the action is probably slightly better in PES - not much in it though.

Pes and fifa are both suitable for kids. I would ask which they prefer as you wouldnt want to get one only for them to say they wish you got the other. Also get the most recent version you can thats at an acceptable price for you. If on pc ensure your pc can run it. The back of the games box will tell you the minimum system requirements.
  • To be honest I wouldn't say that Fifa is suitable for children anymore.
It's filled to the brim with real money gambling now and is essentially a themed casino game at this point that has already caused multiple adult players to run up thousands of pounds in debt, and resulted in several huge credit card bills for unsuspecting parents who've left a credit card linked to an Xbox Live/PSN account.
  • Only if they have a card attached to their Playstation account and I don't see why a child would.

There's no need to ever link a credit card to a PS account for anyone - buy vouchers from the supermarket or online - it's usually cheaper too, and no risk.
  • It's not unusual at all for parents to end up leaving a credit card linked to an Xbox Live/PSN account without even realising it after making a single purchase and not noticing the "Remember my card details" option. There's been a few instances of this reported previously.

Fortunately action is starting to be taken against lootbox gambling, so in future Fifa could very well end up with an 18 rating because of it's inclusion of gambling.

If the parents were to put certain measures to prevent the huge bills it would be fine.
  • My 6 year old plays Fifa on his Nintendo DS and Wii.. very happy with those. He can't read well enough to play the career modes!
  • My other half got into Football manager when he was about 8 (or ChampMan, as it was known back then!). It may seem dry, but some kids really love the hard core statistical stuff; they're just sponges for facts at that age. Really good for geography and maths, too. If you're thinking about PES, keep an eye out for games theme around international tournaments (we have the last Euros one) since there'll be less pressure to upgrade to the new season and the licensing issue isn't so obvious.
