Tesco Won't Accept Debit Card Payment on the phone

Just went to pay my Tesco Credt Card bill by phone as I have done for many years now and was told they would not accept Debit Card (nothing wrong with my card) payments unless I used the Automated Service (which I never do), go to my bank, use online banking, bank transfer or cheque.

She finally agreed to take the debit card when I said that I have had no official notification from Tesco Bank of the change, and insisted that she takes the payment and gets the bank to inform me officially!

Yet ANOTHER nail in Tesco's coffin!

Has anybody else had this problem yet?

Yep - there was a thread about it earlier. Either Tesco or another provider.

It's still available online when you log in:

I don't understand what the issue is, if you want to pay by phone just use the automated service. Or one of the many other various methods. Why do you purposefully feel the need to speak to someone to make a payment? Get with the times.

Hardly a nail in the coffin. I think this will become more common with other card companies

Most people pay by d/d or do it online.

Don't forget most millennials don't like writing letters or speaking on the phone so institutions are having to change how they operate. Isn't using the automated line more secure anyway?

A nail in the coffin ? I have never paid a CC over the phone by card. A few clicks on my laptop, phone or tablet and the money is showing on my CC account instantly.
  • I think all of the above comments have missed the point entirely.

This is just another example of Tesco implementing changes to existing arrangments and contracts without telling their customers FIRST!

And it is quite obvious from the above comments that none of you are currently employed as Customer Service Operatives who are shortlly to loose their jobs?

I'm pretty sure they don't spend a big part of their day taking debit card payments.

    It’s just a non-story.
What were the previous nails in Tesco’s coffin?
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

cant say I care, online banking costs less and takes less of my time
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

i've been doing bank transfer directly to tesco credit card for a long time now. Use the account number as reference and not the card number. Can cause delays if your banking has an old card number on and you have since replaced your card.

The account number stays with it for the lifetime of the account. (found on statement).

There is no reason at this day in age for anyone who is able to use an internet forum is unable to use online banking.
