Bed doesn’t fit upstairs

Hi all,

I bought a bed from DFS a couple of weeks ago and was delivered yesterday however they couldn’t fit all the parts up the stairs.

Before buying the bed, I measured the space thoroughly and have even managed to fit a king size mattress up there. It’s not an abnormal staircase and when the delivery guys turned up they managed to get the head and foot ends up there with little problem.

The issue is that they cannot fit the side parts up the stairs as they are too wide. I’m fully aware that it is my responsibility to make sure it fits which, by and large it does (it will fit the space and two of the parts fit up the stairs).

I’m wondering where I stand here as I was never given any dimensions of the boxes but obviously was given dimensions of the whole bed. What are my rights and what am I entitled to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • You're entitled to take the pieces out of the boxes and see if you can get them up that way.

Can you get them up through the window?
  • That!!!8217;s the problem, they!!!8217;re just a solid one piece thing for each side so taking them out of the packaging would provide little help.
  • Can’t get them through the window either as I don’t have a window big enough (just a single skylight).

So you knew the dimensions of the bed, and its that which is the problem...

if you assumed that the sides would come as multiple little bits, that's your fault I'm afraid, did you buy in store? if so your only right is to a refund per their refund policy, you have no automatic rights.
  • Yes I bought in store and was told it would come in 4 boxes.

So would I be able to get a refund for this?

what do the terms and conditions of your sale say? if they don't say you can have a refund, you have no right to one, there is no automatic right to a refund for a change of mind (which this is, the bed is defective, and is as described) for an in store purchase.

It's up to their refund policy so you'll have to ask them.
  • Their cancellation policy says that I can cancel up to 14 working days after delivery. I may have to pay a collection charge but it’s all still in its original packaging so I should be ok.

I cannot imagine any bed not going up the stairs, they are often bolted together, is dismantling them an option.
You would certainly expect to pay fee, plus delivery and collection if you no longer want the bed.
