  • Managed 18 days AF for Dec in the end.

Can I aim for 28 in Jan please? That target feels a bit steep but I should give it a go really. Thank you.

Thanks for that. I'm hoping my tolerance drops, but I can't see that happening to be honest. I got to 159 days last year, but last night I opened a second bottle of prosecco at 11.30pm and knew that I would finish it as I didn't want to just waste it. But why did I feel the need to open another bottle? Arrgghh. Oh well. Onwards and upwards.

Yes, I do know that feeling :) For my part I found that the tolerance dropped a bit when I did 15 AFDs a month but it dropped really sharply when I started doing between 20 and 25. But those numbers can seem steep before you actually do them so I get that they might put people off. The trouble with drinking is it puts you "in the zone", so opening another bottle just seems at the time to be a really good idea. I'm not sure what tactics can be used to snap out of that zone once in in it. It's basically trying to have good judgement when you've made the choice to have fuzzy judgement. It gets very hard.

I wonder if there's anything out there on the internet at large? I might have a look round. I bet there are others on this thread who might have some thoughts.

    18/16 for December please

    18 for January target please

Starting the new year single again. I’ll need to be mindful I don’t start over drinking again.

HB sorry to hear about your dog. That’s always a hard one.

    Welcome to the newbies.

    Onwards and upwards.

    Back to work today :(

Declaring early on 1/15 please Shaggy
  • Honey Bear, so very sorry to hear about your beloved dog. It's a hard thing to get through - I still miss my two and it's been decades.

Thank you for the excellent advice. Distraction, I think, is key, and I'm hoping that sheer laziness also works in my favour (keeping all the alcohol up in the loft, so getting it requires a lot of effort). I'm trying to find a substitute that works for me - I like herbal tea, but there's only so much of that I can drink, and I've never been a juice/diluting juice/water fan...

Pollyanna, I am in the same boat (especially with prosecco) where it's all too easy to just open the other bottle, and then I feel like I have to keep drinking because a. it's open and b. I feel like I'm wasting money. On NYE I stuck to one bottle of prosecco over 6+ hours of celebrating - I kept mixing the prosecco with a low-sugar fruit cordial (Mr T's - raspberry and lemonade sparkling) and instructed DH to fill it halfway with the fruit cordial. There were a few times where I only had the fruit cordial, in an attempt to space out my drinking... Kept me to the one bottle and I woke up without the typical Hogmanay hangover, which was a nice change.

Going forward, I'm going to try an "AF Advent Calendar" with any wine I have left in the house. I'm going to put a tag on every bottle with a particular date (anniversaries, birthdays, etc.) and see if my self-control sticks to it. I get that this is still rewarding myself with drink (and I'm keen to move away from that!) but hopefully it makes cutting down easier??

  • Honeybear I'm sorry to hear about your woofer, I hope the right companion comes along for you when you are ready.

CuppaTea hope you are toddling along OK.

Pollyanna does interspersing your drinks with AF options work for you? I've discovered that Aldi AF pink sparkling is very acceptable if you don't like juice drinks.

Having had a few on NYE, I resisted yesterday despite having plenty left in the house (always a problem after hosting!). So am on 2/25 as of today. I don't have any occasions coming up this month so hoping to beat my target.

I did enjoy having a few good quality drinks (proper Champagne, mmm) but I did not enjoy the waking at 3am and feeling bleurgh. So I'm looking forward to a mostly dry January :D

    Anybody else?

I'm committing to 3 for the SNC please Shaggy. I'm determined to redress the balance a bit by having an AF Friday.

Back on the wagon today. I haven't had many AF days in December but my stop button still works so no excesses.

1/10 AFDs and 1 for the SNC please.

Thanks for everyone's comments. I'm not sure how to go about drinking less if I do decide on having a drinking day.

I am reading a few blogs and have downloaded a book (probably found it through this thread, but can't quite remember).

I have it in my head to do Dry January, but just scared of committing!

    I have 1/16 to report.
