I go dancing, others choose the gym, or the cinema or theatre. That way I don't spend every evening doing the same thing and drinking from habit/boredom.

Walking for me.....and just lying down listening to ambient sounds....waves, seagulls, garden sounds are my personal favourites...
What do we do when we fall? We get up, dust ourselves off and start walking in the right direction again. Perhaps when we fall, it is easy to forget there are people along the way who help us stand and walk with us as we get back on track.

Long time lurker here, I check in most days and read :D

After watching the Adrian Chiles programme what struck a chord with me was his apparent denial of having a problem. I found the 30 day Alcohol Experiment online and finished it 16 days ago, and have continued AF since. You get a daily email essay and a shortish video covering various aspects of drinking/addiction, how it works on the mind, the physical affects of alcohol, breaking the habit etc and there is a journal part you can fill in if you want.

I hope it may help someone, I cannot recall having such a Long period of abstinence for probably 10 years :T

Definitely thanks for the link. I will find this useful and have signed up. A good share as I have not heard of this one.

Hi Imagnu! I love it when lurkers surface, and that link's a completely new one to me as well, so thanks for it.

Cuppa Tea, putting yourself out of harm's way is another aid - I never drank booze in bed, although I did pretty much everywhere else. For the first few weeks I used to go straight to bed after dinner and read, or very occasionally watch TV on my laptop. It saved all the temptation I'd have been suffering through if I'd stuck to my daily routine intially. You also need an alcohol-free substitute that you like - I swear by Bec*ks Blue, Maman swears by tea, some people use green tea, water, soda water, whatever works. The earlier you can identify it, the easier avoiding temptation when you go out will be. Good luck with the 100 Day Challenge, and I'd suggest you sign up to all of the other Challenges at the same time - the more the merrier. No-one needs to be told you're doing that, and some of them will feel like a more comfortable fit than others.
CuppaTea I just say 'I'm not drinking at the moment.' If they ask why, I usually respond with 'To annoy you, of course'. But I am difficult :D

Could you say you are ending the year with a challenge? Can you put the cash aside for a project / donation and tell people what you are focusing on? I think that's why Sober October /Dry January make things easier, it's a useful shortcut. Also, no need to tell the truth. 'I'm doing a 100 day challenge in memory of my cat, Fluffy. If I make the 100 days I'll donate 100 tins of Whiskas to the RSPCA.'

I absolutely love 'To annoy you, of course' and the Fluffy Challenge! Genius.

27/31 and 30/30 for November please, Shaggy.
    Better is good enough.
  • CuppaTea you sound very determined. It is hard, and it is very additive, so please don't be too hard on yourself if you do find it difficult. Talking with your doc is a very good idea. Is there anything we can do to help?

HB I know from experience to tread carefully on convos with DH! The picking of arguments is what I hate. He complains that we don't spend much time together, but when he's been drinking it always ends with an argument, usually over my supposed terrible behaviour. And in the morning it's all forgotten. I love him and there are some MH complications but I do lose patience sometimes.

    23/21 for me.
