If you upgrade the loft insulation make sure there's adequate ventilation to the timbers and the installers don't just either not bother upgrading the ventilation or block it up.
My res home costs a similar amount to run each month - detached Victorian place, single glazed windows, solid walls etc so really inefficient. Price you pay for living in a nice period property imo. Don't care how low the heating costs are, you wouldn't get me in a modern box, might moan its cold sometimes though ha. Enjoy your home for what it is, get the best deal you can but I wouldn't stress too much about extra insulation etc - some jobs can do more harm than good to the structure of a period property.7 -
We had new insulation in the loft and cavity wall insulation a few years ago....we’ve had terrible condensation since 😳😡.......We turn the heating on and off manually. It doesn’t take long to warm up. Don’t forget there is somebody in your house virtually all day everyday so it’ll take more heating than when folk are out at work all day.January spends - £587.585

Morning all
Thanks for the loft insulation tips. The heating is on a lot because there’s always someone in the house. I really feel the cold especially when I’m working, just sitting at my desk. Yesterday when I was running on my treadmill I realised the radiator in that room was on full blast, no wonder I was sweating! I need to keep an eye on things like that.DIL and DGD are having their hair cut at the hairdressers at the end of my road this afternoon. DIL is bringing DGD here so I can look after her until it’s her appointment time rather than her sit around in the salon. No idea if this is legal under Tier 3 rules but they live 20 miles away so this is the best way we can work it. I suppose it’s classed as childcare so is fine. I’m not worrying about it.
Need to go to the local shops today for just a few bits. The Ninja is arriving today 🎉 This should save on electricity as I won’t be using the oven as much once I get to grips with it.
Have a super Saturday xI get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)9 -

enthusiasticsaver said:Getting thicker insulation in your loft will help with energy bills. My DH relaid ours a few years ago as our old insulation wasn't thick enough and not up to current regulations. Older houses are more difficult to heat though.
900mm in total. 3 layers of the stuff!7 -

We moved from there to a 1930's semi. That was much more energy efficient but the sound insulation between properties was non existent.
From there we moved to this new build. It is by far and away our favourite house of the three. The running costs are next to nothing and it feels a much more solid house than the semi. Yes it was a bit bland and out of the box when we moved in, but you then have to put your own stamp on it. We have enjoyed making this house our home.9 -

Gutted that Christmas Eve with DS and the GKs is now cancelled by Boris ☹️ They will have to come to exchange presents but it’ll have to be done in the drive. Will now have to take a few things out of the basket on my next Mr M delivery.Cooking sweet potato and rustic chips in the Ninja using the air fryer mode. The Ninja is massive and really heavy. DD is going to watch some You Tube videos on how to cook a whole chicken in it. Need to get to grips with it.Was nice to see DGD before taking her to get her hair cut. Can’t believe DS is 36 tomorrow 😱I get knocked down but I get up again (Chumbawamba, Tubthumping)8

It's very sad for everyone who had been planning a get together and now can't. I wonder if we'll end up having a Christmas in summer or, more likely, people making their own around some other occasion once restrictions lift?
I know it probably won't be the same but the main thing will be spending time together.
We are a little island of very low virus rates this week - brilliant for now though we still get tier 2 restrictions - but I can't help feeling our time will come, possibly soon after Christmas. We will see.I think a bit of sunshine is good for frugal living. (Cranky40)
