Just be aware that if you use iCloud the computer/pad only stores thumbnails of the pics. You will not be able to get the pics if you loose iCloud or do not have internet access, we found this when we wanted to show aged parents pics on my Macbook. for this reason I keep all pics on a couple of hard drives as well.

I was referring to the search facilities etc. which was quoted in my reply.
Amazon also does face recognition, so i can search for particular people. I don't think Google does that - even if they did back in the days of Picassa.

I don't want to turn this into a pantomime competition.....But
I believe you need to pay for Prime to get the facial recognition feature.
Google gives it for free, unfortunately not natively in Europe (Privacy laws apparently???), but, it can be implemented fairly easily with a vpn.
Both are valid storage options and both are very good, which you choose is purely personal.

Google Photos does do that... sort of.

It can group similar faces which you can then tag with a name, and you can tell it which face is yours so it can suggest your name to others (I think, I just said no to that feature when it was offered). But as with so many Google features, it's only offered in certain countries.
You can only turn on face match if you are in the US (and a few others but I don't know them off the top of my head(. Presumably they were worried about EU Privacy laws (even though it doesn't do facebook style matching faces to identities).

All you need to do is either visit the US or teleport to a spot that just happens to be in the same area as the US node of a free VPN service such as Tunnel Bear, at the same time you decide to try out a GPS spoofing app that also just so happens to be in the US. Clear local app data for the google photos app*, then run it. Face matching should be in the settings. Once you've turned it on you can safely teleport back to blighty and the setting will stick.

It's a shame such shenanigans are needed, because it's a really useful feature. You can search your albums for particular people and terms such as 'Daughter on the beach' and it will find them without having to meticulously tag everything.

*I believe you need to use the photos app on an android phone, but it could work on the desktop version, never tried.
