Splitting family holiday costs

I think the suggestion of 1/16th is the fairest since the children seems to be little. It wouldn't have fair if they had been teenagers (so could argue should count as an adult).
Everything else to be paid separately.0 -
Before I read this thread it would honestly not have occurred to me that three families holidaying together with their own birth family would pay anything other than a three-way split. Maybe I am out of step but I can see where the OP's mother is coming from.
You are all enjoying the communal facilities which tend to be larger/ better equipped in properties designed to sleep more and you are all enjoying the family time. I can't really fathom why having a couple more kids is a factor for the sister having to pay more for the accommodation.0 -
We had a cash kitty just for when we were out and about together. It was mainly used for coffees and things like that. As we had far more adults than children we were happy to just have adults paying into the kitty. It did mean the children were treated to their drinks but as we were all their aunties and uncles we didn't mind.
Other bills I put on my credit card (like supermarket shopping or large meals) then billed everyone when we got home and the bill came.
It's difficult not to come up with a system that doesn't 'penalise' your sister for having more children than you!:)0 -

I'm the opposite,I think the sister should pay more, she has the larger family and will use more of everything.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
Paying per head is the fairest, even if it costs the OP's sister half of the total cost. Bear in mind that the OP, her husband and one year old could go outside of school holidays for a fraction of what they are having to pay because her sister has school-age kids.0

i'd split it three ways. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

I agree. If the mum is bothered, she can offer to pay for part of that daughters cost or a larger share of the holiday in general.0 -

I think that's very unfair on the grandparents though, who are already having to travel at an expensive time of year and at a time when facilities will be crowded. They won't even be having any private space to get away from all those children who, much as they love them, will be very draining on a week or fortnight's holiday.0 -

I am assuming that this is something they really want to do though. I imagine it isn't a regular occurrence, so going in school holidays is part of the deal if you go with adult children and their children.
If they wanted private space then the suggestion of three sets of accommodation on the same site would be the way forward. The OP has already dismissed that idea.
I have to say that when we do this ( no grandchildren yet though!) we pay for the villa and the adult kids just pay for their flights and any meals we eat out.0 -

When my parents were alive and we were working, we paid for them to come on holiday with us. We wouldn't have dreamed of expecting them to pay for us!0
