..if it was my family we would just divide the costs between my family and my sisters, my retired parents would not be expected to pay for the accommodation.

You see it would be the opposite in my family, my retired parents would pay for it.

Quite simply you talk to your family about how to share the cost.
    .....

  • Just split it by the number of people to keep it simple. The person that could possibly feel this was unfair would be yourself, as I am assuming your 1 year old will be in a cot? So personally I would split by the number of people occupying beds, although as this may mean it is much more expensive for your sister you may just want to pay for your child to keep it simple.

I have spoken to my family about it. My sister just said to split it how I think is best and tell her what she owes me once I’ve booked it all. I do think splitting it per person is fairest – and I am more than happy to pay a share for my daughter – I don’t see why an extra bed in one room is different to a cot.

I think it’s just my mum doesn’t think it’s fair if my sister pays more.

I don’t think any one household is significantly better off.

Adults count twice as much as kids .. 6 adults and 4 kids total.

You, partner & 1 kid = 5/16ths of the cost
Parents = 4/16ths of the cost (so a quarter)
Sister, partner & 3 kids = 7/16ths of the cost

    Is that too complicated?

  • Your sister should pay more because there are more peopel in her family.

I agree, divide it by ten, she pays 5/10/ you 3/10 and your parents 2/10. If your parents wish to subsidise her they can do.

    Seems fair.

Can I just ask what the reasoning is behind adults counting twice as much as children?

If I had a larger family I would expect to pay more. I do think if you're a family of 5, restricted to going away in the school holiday, you're always going to have to pay quite a lot for a holiday

Ask your mum to sort it out then ...

Bear in mind that you're also going to have costs once you get there. I'd definitely for the food split on a per person basis, but possibly make a reduction if any child really wasn't going to eat as much as the others. If you DON'T split the accommodation this way then it needs to be clear what's happening about the food ...

If your mum is offering to subsidise your sister that is very kind of her. If she expects you to do so it is not her call. If you paid for 3/10 and sister and mum 3.5/10 each would everyone be happy?

Well then both of you put on a united front and just tell your mum you've sorted it between the two of you and you're both happy with what you're paying, then change the subject! She doesn't need to know the numbers.
