Self help thread. I am a widow coping getting on with it

Yes LL - I am just the same. Obviously expected the emotional upset but always thought that I would simply be able to pick myself up and just carry on with life. Always I have been able to cope with whatever life has thrown at me . . . . not this time. So, like you, I must be impatient too!!0

Kittie - my hair (which has always been fine and thin) has become very thin and has the 'see through' effect. I hate it (not that I'm vain or anything!)
I think I shall have to start following your diet plan. Hopefully everything (health, hair, diet and stress etc) will get on an even keel at some point. Again, I am impatient and expect miracles overnight!!!!0 -
Thanks Kittie for the recommendation of the book Widow to Widow, I have ordered it. I also agree with you all about spending after bereavement. I made some really silly financial decisions in the first year but am now trying to be more measured in my approach. The panic attacks and flashbacks are reducing but motivation is still hard. I think my self confidence has really dropped, have to force myself to do and deal with things that would not have worried me before. Hope everyone stays warm and safe in the snow.0

I got the pressure king pro and splashed out on the six litre one as I wanted to be able to cook large amounts but the three litre one at around £49 might be a better buy for most people.
Dds and sil have just left with a couple of portions of the lasagne to take home and some beef sausages and turkey rashers for dd who is trying to avoid pork while she is pregnant. I have a portion of lasagne for myself and lamb chops are defrosting to make a stew later. Just about to load dishwasher and clear the kitchen before having a pot of tea and a browse on here.
DDs and sil have been discussing the fact that I do not have a burglar alarm which is worrying them as there have been a couple of break ins in the town so I have agreed to do a bit of research on a simple system.
I have a big load of towels to wash but will wait till tomorrow when the tumble drier should be fixed.
Hugs to all0 -
I totally understand the hair problem as mine is coming out a lot. When he was ill my washing machine stopped working and it was a drainage problem and my hair had blocked the water getting to the filter. I always have to clear my plug strainer in my shower or I'm standing in water!
Anyone recommend products that help?Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

The protein that I mentioned above torry and maybe a very gentle baby shampoo, oh I also use a silk pillow slip, which stops my hair being pulled when I turn in my sleep
Elona I use my pressure cooker a lot, it is just a normal pressure cooker and does a stew on 20 minutes, soup in 7minutes or so. I have a shallow one, bought ages ago and cheaper than this price

I have just changed a valve on the lid and it will be good for many more years
I also have a bigger one from when we were a family of 5, I keep it for batch soups to freeze or for bigger casseroles0 -

I got put off the idea of a traditional pressure cooker about 35 years ago when a cousin had an old fashioned one and blew off her eyebrows. So far I am enjoying my gadget and anything that encourages me to cook rather than grab "stuff" has got to be a good thing.
I have found some food containers that can be reused and are microwave and freezer safe and non PBS so have ordered some as the ordinary plastic cheap ones keep breaking and were annoying me.
Youngest dd has gone back with my small cordless vac as I don't need it and she does not have one in the rented flat. I also gave her some of the lasagne and a few bits and bobs to save her shopping.
Have just gone on tkmaximus and been very tempted by the lovely baby outfits. I restricted myself to looking at 9 months and 12 months sizes and found some really good tops, trousers and two piece outfits at a third of the RRP so a few things may have snuck into my basket (blush).0 -
I am convinced! This morning I have been looking at YouTube videos for the Pressure King Pro and will be getting one. It looks pretty much foolproof. I have never had a pressure cooker before because I was always rather alarmed by the one my mother had. Obviously things have improved in the last 60 or so years!!!!0

Someone I visited recently had Good Food: Meals for One - a BBC cookbook which they now swear by. They were getting fed up of cooking and eating the same old same old things time and again and this has given some fresh ideas, also on quantities which can be tricky after years of NOT cooking for one. Don't know if this will help anyone.Signature removed for peace of mind0

That has just reminded me that Shirley Goode published "Goode for one" years ago which had some very good ideas.

Because I like meals to cook down and reduce I have been giving recipes twice as long as they suggest for things like stews and bolognese and it seems to work well. don't forget that it works as much more than just a pressure cooker.0
