First ever internet phone ...

What do you want to do with the phone? I'm asking because another option would be to buy a tablet - a tablet is basically like a bigger smartphone but without the 'telephone' bit included. If you are only going to be using it at home, you could get one that works just on WiFi (which is cheaper than getting one that can use mobile data).
If you will be using it sitting on a sofa trying out apps, sending emails and watching YouTube etc, because a tablet has a bigger screen it is less fiddly to use. A phone is obviously more use when you are out and about.0 -

I'd take issue with that, Samsung phones are overpriced now for what they are, there are many equally good phones at more realistic prices.0 -
I've got a plain simple mobile that phones and texts. I top up with a tenner every 3 months. Just use it for family when we're out and about.
I want a phone to catch up with forums and FB and emails when I'm out of the house, in the house I use my laptop.
I'll go into a phone shop and ask daft-old-lady questions and see what kind of stuff they shove at me, then come back here and report to you lot. I trust you a lot more than I would a salesman0 -

Unless you are already invested in Apple products, there's no real reason to go for an iPhone unless you particularly want one, and there is far more value to be had when looking at Android phones. Something like the already mentioned Nokia 3 or 5, the Moto G5?
Just remember that coming from a standard mobile phone to a smartphone of any kind, you will need to get used to charging it up regularly!0 -
If you want to use the Internet for that sort of thing I would advise against getting a PAYG deal, as the costs soon rack up and eat through your credit. There's a few £5 a month deals to be had, although I think the BT one is now £6. Even then you don't get a huge amount of bang for your buck, personally I would go for 1GB a month at the very least.
Carphone Warehouse will know what suits your needs best out of several providers, unlike the individual operators like 02, Vodafone etc., who obviously want to sell their own contracts.
Happy hunting!I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I always ask a couple of questions that I already know the answers to - if they flannel me, or lie, it can be a dead giveaway.0

DONT DO IT!!!!!!!
stay with the dumb phone crew. Lost of people don't have a smart phone and manage just fine.
I for example have a Nokia 3310. on a talk and text only package I pay £5 per month, I can do everything I need on the laptop and...... I can switch off from Facebook/twitter/emails/everything once the laptop closes and/or I leave the house. Plus it has snake, the best mobile phone game EVER!!!!!!
I have had an iPhone in the past, the battery dies after 24hrs (mostly less), its bigger than a dumb phone and easier to break, its more expensive in terms of tariffs and its too easy to go over your internet allowance.
Of course I'm not telling you what to do, I just want you to know that you are not alone in not having a smart phone and actually a lot of millennial are ditching the smartphones in favour of a dumb phone.
Im 33 and my friends say I'm crazy, but their £60 per month phone contract tells me different.
hope this helps :-)
If you have one of the new 3310's it can access the Internet to an extent, though over mobile data rather than being connected up to WiFi. The reviews reckon the new 3310 Snake isn't as good though.
I recently ditched an iPhone for a smartphone I paid £170 for and while I'd agree that iPhones are unnecessary, an Internet phone needn't break the bank. Mobile data can be disabled if desired so one can't run up a data bill.
Nothing can match a dumb phone battery wise but it seems that most smartphones can outperform a iPhone when it comes to the battery.
Comes down to preference of being able to switch off with a dumb phone or having the convenience of not having to switch on the laptop to check emails or look something up. £60 per month is madness either way.0
