Was that the donation to charity one? I'd guessed they were testing out truthfulness but agree they shouldn't be promising then retracting - that isn't ethical. I've never had any comeback from reporting studies, if that helps?

@elsien I didn't get any response from Prolific or the researcher. I see that the 50p payment has been authorised. I've donated £1 to the charity I chose.

In this study I will ask you to watch some videos and answer questions about your experience. If you are able to answer some questions correctly, you could earn a bonus!

Note: The videos in this study are about weight loss. If viewing content about weight loss may negatively affect you, please refrain from participating in this study.

I answered a couple of questions about which SM platforms I use then got dumped out with a completion code, followed by a message

You have been asked to return your submission for "Social Media Survey" for the following reason(s):

    • Inconsistent responses

    Please return the submission

Has anyone heard any more about this yet? Mine is still awaiting review, and I haven't received any reply from the researcher to my message asking them to explain what was inconsistent about my responses. Wondering if they're going to try their luck at rejecting our submissions.

I've not heard anything or had approval either. According to the link you posted previously, there's a limit on the number of rejections they can put through without having to request an increase. I dare say some people having received that message will have returned the study, but there could be a chunk of us stubborn sods who haven't.

"All studies on Prolific have a limit on the number of submissions researchers can reject by default. This is because a rejection negatively impacts a participant's Prolific Score, which could prevent them from taking part in further studies on our platform.

We typically find that the automatic rejection limit is sufficient, but if you reach the maximum number of rejections for your study and require more, you will need to get in touch with the Support Team using the button at the bottom of this article to request a review of this limit.

It is important to remember that we are a platform that serves both researchers and participants, so we will need to make sure that your rejection reasons are fair and in line with the above guidelines. Therefore, when you submit your request, we will ask for the following information:

    • Name of study (including internal name, if relevant)
    • Study questions, the related concerning responses, and the relevant participant IDs (any format is fine)
    • Any additional information that might be useful to assist our review (e.g. context about your study). If you are submitting a rejection limit increase request due to failed attention check items, please include a screenshot of the attention check(s) in question.

Please note, we won't be able to increase your rejection limit until we have this information. By providing this, you are helping us to make sure everything is fair for everyone on Prolific!"

The thing of it is, if they'd just sent me a message saying, sorry, there was a technical problem with our study, could you please return it - I'd probably have done so, even without a compensatory payment, as I'd spent less than a minute on it. But accuse me of giving inconsistent responses when I know I didn't, and you're going to get me digging in my heels.

Did anyone do the "Donating to charity" survey which was supposedly about having a conversation with an AI assistant? I got repeated errors when trying to start the AI chat, and so the only bit of the study I actually did was the question about how much of my bonus I wanted to donate to charity. I answered zero, as I always do - if I want to donate, I'll do it off my own back, not be guilt-tripped into it as part of a study. So I ended up with a generous bonus of £20 for less than 5 minutes work. Given the title of the study, I can't help wondering if the AI chat actually existed or if it was just a ruse to get people to answer the charity question. So if anyone else did it, did you have the same experience, or did anyone actually manage to chat with the purported AI? I messaged the researcher about the errors and they assured me they'd received my data, although there was no data to receive other than from the charity question.

I did it. Same experience. I did donate a bit to charity but have been paid the full £20 bonus anyway.

I did a few AI type ones in a cluster yesterday afternoon and a couple of the others were a bit odd where you seemed to do little but answer a question so I didn't think much about the charity one but never expected to be paid!
  • Same for the charity one - it was all a bit odd.
  • I'm new to prolific Some basic questions.

How and how often do you get chosen for surveys? What would the hourly rate of pay be (estimated average is fine). Any issues on being paid for it? Presume the payment methods include bank/paypal withdrawal?

    Thanks

I’m finding a few a day, but often 1 minute surveys that pay 15p. I generally average about £80 a month.

They only pay to PayPal, payment is quick and you can cash out whenever you want. To have a survey rejected is rare, occasionally a researcher asks you to return a survey, but that is also rare and often for a reason that is obvious to you.

To clarify - you can cash out once you have over £5 approved balance. Surveys are often approved immediately, but they can take up to 22 (I think) days
