  • Frankly if this happens I'll just stop doing studies once I'm getting close to £1000 for the year. The little I earn above that isn't worth the added hassle of having to keep accounts and file tax returns. (It won't be worth it for the tax man either, as it won't come remotely close to putting my overall income into a tax paying bracket.)

Chances are you'd do one or two tax returns and they'd then say they're not interested in you compiling future returns

Is anybody else getting a lot of studies today? I've completed 12 and missed out on several more. At one point there were 9 different surveys in my list, couldn't get them done quick enough! No big payers, but  they all add up. I've got about £50 to go to reach my target for this calendar year, didn't think I'd make it but now I'm not so sure. Fingers crossed.

I’ve just had to return one, because the researcher clearly wanted younger people but hadn’t prescreened properly. Or rather I didn’t have to return it but I felt that I should.

I assume they are asking for address and date of birth so they can liaise with HMRC (though I am just guessing).
This is the most likely reason. From January, platforms like Prolific will have to share data with HMRC about who they're paying :
    https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/hmrc-is-clamping-down-on-side-hustles-what-tax-do-you-need-to-pay-aIykn5m0v5Jj

Good link and this probably explains it.  I wonder if Prolific will be asking for NI numbers (or the equivalent for other countries) next and if so how many will be willing to give that info?  I would have thought an NI number would have been required for tax interaction?
  • Anyone else have issues with this one?  25 session multi-parter, over two weeks with a minimum of an hour between each session.  Second session didn't submit on Prolific, so I contacted researcher to ask whether payrate was in total or per session and to say that my second session wasn't showing and got the most garbled, irrelevant answer which didn't actually answer either of my questions.  Returned.

    Cleaner Study

    By unsw.edu.au

I completed this Study and, on the last page, my Prolific ID was not accepted.  I was not able to continue to the next page to receive a completion code and I submitted with "No Code."

On the last page, when I answered all the questions there was one issue to fix:    Next, we would like to ask a few questions about your background. All information you provide will be treated confidentially and anonymously. After this section, the survey will be completed and you will receive your unique completion code to insert on Prolific so that we can process your payment.

    Please enter a valid number.
    *
    Please enter your Prolific ID

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx  (I entered my correct Prolific ID)"

My Prolific ID  was not accepted.  As a result I was prevented from proceeding to the final page to receive a Completion Code.  I contacted the Researcher but did not receive a reply before I would have been Timed Out.  As a result I completed with "NO CODE."

Has anyone else experienced this or knows what the problem could be, please?

UPDATE:   Although I did not receive a reply from the Researcher, my submission was approved and I received payment.  Pleased but still not sure why my Prolific ID was not considered to be valid.

I did some research this morning and I came up with the following information:

Every January prolific will be required to send a statement to HMRC about your earnings, the first period of reporting will be the year ended 31 December 2024, which they need to report by 31 January 2025.  Note these requirements do not follow the financial year dates.

Prolific will send you a copy of the details supplied to HMRC to the address you have registered with them.

The legislation comes from “The Platform Operators (Due Diligence and Reporting Requirements) Regulations 2023”, which were laid before the House of Commons on 19 July. They bring into force OECD rules that were adopted by the EU.

However anyone who earns £1,000 or less from a side hustle in a tax year does not have to pay tax or declare this income, thanks to the trading allowance.

Obviously if you also sell on Vinted or ebay etc or earn from a Youtube channel for example you could soon exceed the £1,000 trading allowance even if you don’t on Prolific.

While the reporting requirement is from 1 January 2024, there is nothing to stop HMRC asking individuals whether income from that source started before then - which could cause big tax bills, and potentially fines, for some people.

There is a handy tool to check if you need to tell HMRC about additional income on gov.uk.

The above information is from a quick search this morning and happy to be corrected, as I am not a tax expert by any means.

Does this mean the £1000 is from.january to January or still April to April reason being this year I have gone over 1000 for January to January but still under 1000 for April to april

Good question, but I am not sure to be honest.  I am not a tax expert by any means and you would have to ask someone more knowledgeable than me.

Personally I do not earn more than a £1000 on Prolific annually whichever way it is worked out, but I have other online activities like buying and selling which will take me over the £1000 trading allowance.

I may have to stop using Prolific, or at least not accept as many studies.  Not sure yet.

Hopefully there will be some further clarification in the near future.  Is the HMRC going to chase people for going over the limit by a relatively small amount?
