grandfather Driving rights

Hi
I wanted to inquire is it me or its it completely unfair, that those whom passed driving test before jan 1997, have all these outrageous categories. C1 & D1 even towing trailers I hear
Those whom passed afterwards don't???????
Why are they allowed to simply retain them and not be removed? Is the government doing any think about this
I wanted to hire a minibus, only to be told I cant coz I don't have d1, where as my friend could as he passed before jan 1997?
I have been told I would need to do subsequent tests? is this money making scheme or what? why hasn't everyone's rights been revoked, to make it fair?
I don't see how a driver whom passed prior 1997 in a car, doing no theory what so ever is qualified to drive d1 and c1 vehicles, and those passing after 1997 are not?
Is there anyway around this, can we all simply get these category and do some sort of vocation training course. To be doing tests is very expensive I can see?

If you want the relevant entitlements adding to your licence you will need to do the tests that go with them, no way around it.0

You sound like a right selfish git, why when the rules change should everyone have to revert back to square one, there has to be some cut off date and Jan 1997 was it.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0

Life isn't fair- get used to it.

I learned this in school, or possibly before.
Nowadays kids are taught that everybody has "rights", that life is "fair" and if you simply work hard and get qualifications that everything will be fine.
When they find out that none of this is actually true*, it hits them like a hammer blow
*OK, everybody does have "rights", just some people's "rights" are more important than others
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

You can add the categories very easily, just take the appropriate tests.
They changed it because you could pass your test in a mini and then drive a 7.5ton vehicle the next day.
But plenty of people work driving 7.5ton vehicles and have done for many years and they cannot just take that away from them.
You can tow a trailer with the latest licence, yes there are restrictions but it doesnt really affect many drivers who load the trailer to a sensible limit to the towcar. Excludes those that want a 3 ton tank and tow a 3 ton trailer.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

I person that passed there test many years ago will have had a lot of driving experience. To become an airline pilot, you need a minimum number of hours experience.
No point in stopping someone that is already driving a minibus, but a requirement of more training is a good idea.0 -
It's worse than that. There was a time where people were just given licences.
My dad got his driving licence as part of his demob after WW2 sand passed his test by driving round a field for an hour or so. He then first drove on the road in 1963. He did get a mate to give him a refresher. He never had a crash until a diabetic attack in his 80s and he stopped driving.0 -

If it was a money making scheme then don't you think they would have indeed revoked those grandfather rights when they changed things?0 -
Driving isn't a right - it's a privilege which many abuse.
I'd revoke any licence where the driver couldn't pass an advanced driving test. An advanced driving test is a misnomer as it only tests for careful, attentive driving.
It would at least halve the cars on the road and reduce accidents even more due to the standard of driving and reduced congestion.
Anyone having an at fault accident or getting a driving charge of careless or dangerous driving should have a retest.
Just a thought! (Ducks and runs away).0 -
As someone whose licence has all of those “outrageous categories” on it, I will say that it’s a well known fact that the training and tests pre-1997 were much more thorough and rigorous. I well remember towing a trailer behind the minibus I sat my test in.
Things change over time and sometimes those things benefit some people and sometimes you lose out. I’m sure that in other aspects of life you have access to all sorts of things your elders didn’t, for example. Maybe you’d rather be much younger than you are and finding it impossible to get on the housing ladder or impossible to get a council house when previous generations were able to do so? Or perhaps be much older and remember having to raise a family on post-war rations or during the three-day week?0 -

I think the OP's point (albeit confused) relates to those, like me, who have lots of entitlements for which they have NEVER passed a test, rigorous or otherwise.
The only test I've ever passed (in 1967) was in a BMC Mini, but I am entitled to drive all sorts of things including trailers and 7.5 tonne goods vehicles, not to mention road rollers.0
