The S6 is expected to get an Android Oreo update after the S7.
The generation leap may not be that massive.

S8 hasn't got Oreo yet, never mind S7, never mind S6. Don't hold your breath! S7 was a good jump over the 6, and the 8 and 9 I would call refinements. An S8 or 8 is a good jump over a 6.

I think Black Friday might be a little long to wait, but right now has got to be the most expensive time to buy the S9. They're not discounting the S8 enough either considering it's a year old now. I reckon if you can wait 2 or 3 months, keep your eye out on MSE and HUKD, you could get a good deal if you're ready to jump when it comes along.

Don't know about now, but S8 / Plus was discounted heavily around Black friday last year which is when I got my S8 Plus. For those with an S8/Plus the S9 is just a small jump and makes no sense to shell out all that money again for little or no gain.

Personally, if I was in the market for a high end phone right now I'd look for deals on S8/Plus or Pixel 2. Both top quality high end phones and both can hold their own against anything else out there right now.

Will the S9 or S8 really drop much more in the next 2 or 3 months. I don't want to wait as long as ack Friday. I have to take in to account that I can get £150 for my S6 when trading in via Samsung and buying outright. Envirophone offer just £80. It would need to drop a fair bit to beat that total outlay, so, given the S8 is only £70-80 less, I think it makes sense to go with the S9. Or perhaps I'm just trying to justify the spend.

I've just seen that the S8 is now £485 on Amazon. £100 less than the S9 with trade in. Or £180 less plus income from Envirophone.

    What a conundrum.

If you have enough to spend for the s9 then by all means. But if it's not a priority I don't think there's any good to that. S8 and S9 and very similar in so many ways and I don't see the price difference being reasonable. Just my thought.
  • It is like the iPhone 6s, 7 and 8. The difference between them is negligible.
  • There's little price difference between the S8 and S9 and I would prefer getting the S9 but would wait for a good deal. I agree that the S9 is better for obvious reasons like the finger scanner now moved below the back camera.

I think you should definitely hold out to see if the S8 will drop in price.

I bought the S8 on release with the intention of keeping it for 5+ years and it has been a great phone so far.

I have not looked at the detail, but I believe the S9 will basically be an upgraded camera and some novelty emoticon options. If you don't need those, the S8 will be a good choice for you.

I got mine interest free finance on the samsung website (via paypal credit) and grabbed a cheap sim only deal, rather than getting it on contract via a network.

Just traded my Galaxy S8 in for the Galaxy S9+ via CarPhoneWarehouse which also comes with a Samsung 128GB memory card thrown in - Will work out at £365. Not bad for a bigger phone and the latest model.
