I wonder if the person who claimed that plasma tv's need "topping up," will also assert that the liquid crystals in lcd tv's also need refilling. Dear oh dear!

I have just seen an LG 1080p 42 inch LCD in TJ Hughes for £699. For the extra, I would probably be tempted by the LG, to be honest. Does that make me a bit of a label snob? :rotfl:

    Seriously?

I might be tempted by that, could be worth the 20mile drive to TJ Hughes,
I was looking at a SAMSUNG LE37R87BDX which has got some excellent reviews online, 37" LCD, not bad, for about £540 online (using pricegrabber) not 1080p but apparently has fantastic picture quality
    £4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
    £400 O/D Lloyds TSB
    £2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
    £5070 Black Horse Finance

Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!

I have been toying with getting a big screen well for a couple of years, and with one thing or another when I did have the cash something else came along and took it. Anyway I decided to get another Samsung really wanted a 37" but out of stock so opted for 40" when I saw it on hduk the other day. I also got a stand with it. Managed to get £24+ tracked n cashback too

lol @ people arguing about tv's

the original post was about a CHEAP tv and so far the recommended tv price is going the wrong way, up and not down.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but can I ask a question regarding LCD and Plasma screens?

I was in Comet last week and the salesman suggested buying a plasma TV if you have children who are likely to touch the screen a lot, especially if the TV is at a level they can reach. I was told if an LCD screen is touched it will damage the screen permanently.

I've read lots on comparing LCDs and plasmas, but never seen this mentioned.

Can anyone advise me on this, as I was probably going to buy an LCD until I heard this advice?

Plasmas have a glass screen a bit like a CRT so very easy to clean and very scratch resistant , 99% of LCD tv's dont have glass so it is more easy to damage and scratch

You really need to learn to read first or have your head or something looked into. I recommended the SAMSUNG in my post and advising people to look at it first before parting with their cash for the Tevion. I once again was recommending the Samsung which is IMHO a much better value than the tevion from Aldi. With the risk of repeating myself:
    1) Read the posts properly.
    2) If you have some useful advice then say it
    3) Don't just make stupid sweeping statement without explanation and backup
    4) Please do not waste our time anymore.

BTW, Here is the link again in case you missed it the first time around:

i do appologise -my mistake as i never read your link but please dont insult people as its not the in the nature of money saving expert members !
i have personally viewed that model( nice set) and tens of others , read litterally hundreds of owners views on top range models and endless magazine ratings .
i based my choice on all of the above and from other forums and thats why i chose the plasma .
read any av forum quote and 80%+ will say 40" and over choose the plasma unless your buying the latest 40" + lcds ( full 1080) selling in the £1500-£3000 range.
MSE members are after a deal and the plasma came out tops versus the lcd in that particular price group and with the benefit of the plasma that extra 50mm of viewing . thats why i posted my coment and yes similar to you
that i dont want other members to regret there purchase .
i regret not reading your post but do you read every single post and link , because i honestly dont have time too.
all im trying to do is offer a bit of friendly advise to other members and if it helps just one member then im happy

I've been informed by a plasma owner that the brightness of his TV has a half life of 3 years, and so he "tops up" the plasma to restore the brightness.

Surely forum posts should be productive as well as being challenging (and in your case sarcastic), so correct me if I am wrong (with legit reasoning) so as people reading the thread are not ill-informed.

I'm aiming to give unbiased advice on TVs from things I have heard and personal experience, so please avoid the sarcasm and explain why I'm wrong.

I was given a 2 year old 37" LCD by a relative as he bought a new one. The LCD screen had a good beating my his three sons, especially the 3 year old one with the remote control, the Wii remote etc. on numerous occasion over the years. When the LCD was passed to me, I had doubts as to how long the LCD will last. It was still watchable and operated OK.

The LCD continue to have a good beating on the screen, this time with my 3 year old. However much you tell them not to do it, they still do it every now and again. Sometimes, with the remote, sometimes with a toy and often pressing their little fingers hard on the LCD screen. About 2 months after the LCD was given to be, my son finished off the LCD by hitting it with a toy. I suppose you could say the LCD was on its last leg, and my son finished it off. The LCD screen now display many lines of funky colors. Basically, it is now unwatchable, I had to take out my old fashion TV to use. The LCD does not have a screen that covers the display, therefore making it prone to screen damaged. After this incident, I have notice that all plasma TV have a screen covering where as LCD do not. If I was to buy another TV, I would either buy a plasma or wait until my kids are older before buying a LCD.

not all plasmas have glass screens, my panasonic viera plasma has a plastic screen. i was surprised though when I got it out of its box, I was expecting glass.

Agreed but most LCD's have no protection at all
