Here's my updated view on the goings on of this debate

From viewing perspectives, however, plasmas do tend to come out on top.

That ch 5 Gadget programme did a test & the LCDs came out with a better picture. Some of the better LCDs have a similar contrast, ie deep Blacks as the Plasmas nowadays. Plasmas will give you screen burn if you watch Sky or other programmes with a logo over a period of time, & that's the vast majority of channels, apart from BBC1/2 ITV 1 & Ch 4. I have nothing against Plasma, I had a Panasonic & was over the moon with it, but having moved on to LCD, mainly because of the screen burn, I would never move back.
    Nice to save.

Avoid like the plague. I have one of these and it isnt even plugged in now. Awful TV bought a le40m86 sammy to replace it. Anyone got any proof they use samsung panels, because the difference is huge.

Maybe you could tell us why it's such a bad TV? I presume you mean an older Tevion from Aldi?

I personally have no proof about it being a Samsung panel, but the techie people who have bought Tevions all confirm that it is.

It would seem likely that this Tevion uses a Samsung panel - previous ones definitely have.

Thing is, Samsung will make a range of panels with different specs - the contrast ratio of the Tevion is 1200:1 which is nothing special nowadays.

Many LCDs can only acheive ratios of 5000:1 and more by using active backlight technology, effectively reducing brightness on dark scenes. Also non-HD sources need some clever noise reduction to look good on a big screen. Neither of these is anything to do with the panel itself, but the image processing technology employed.

Saying "It must be good - it's got a Samsung panel" is a bit like saying "My Octavia is great - it's got a VW engine". There's more to it than that.

As I've said before, even if it's a decent set, £570 is not cheap enough in a fiercely competitive LCD market at the moment. I can't see people camping outside their local store at 6am for one of these.

    :)

    Tevion?

Really, do Tevion really use Samsung screens, Panasonic components and designed by B & O?

Rubbish ! B&Q more like, they use really rubbishy components. It's like comparing a Ford/Vauxhall to a Lexus/Rolls Royce

Nothing like a misinformed debate is there? I bought a Tevion 40" LCD from Aldi in Sept 06 at £799 and its been great. It has the same screen as put into the then current Samsung models and twin tuners from LG. Its conected to Sky HD and is absolutely brilliant on the HD channels. If I was being picky, I can notice the black is not quite black sometimes and the sound was nothing special but I've since added a panasonic home cinema to it.

    Agreed.
It's a fact that the cheap LCD & Plasma TVs use older screen panels. Considering how far forward both LCD and Plasma have come in the past 12 months, I'd say its a fool who'd buy a cheap TV right now.
You'll also note that the TV on offer from Aldi is only 768 res ... and not the full HD.

Sadly folk only look at the price, and think because its cheap they're getting a bargain.
Last weekend I bought the latest Panasonic Viera LCD TV (37LZD70), only £300 more than the Aldi TV, but the difference quality will be huge.

If its a fact, can you point me to the evidence? Or is it really your assumption that its a fact, a bit like your statement that its only 768 lines but is infact 1080i? It may not be full HD (to use the marketeer phrase) but who braodcasts in 1080p? So why spend money on the latest spec if you can't make use of it unless you also upgrade your entire DVD collection and PS/Xbox games & consoles as well?

Anyone would think that Aldi were forcing people to buy this set...

For £597 excellent value for a superb TV and fantastic picture.

    Thanks to raph_b from HUKD.

I went for one of these earlier after checking the picture out in the shop and was so impressed I thought you guys should consider it before the Aldi one. Hope this helps those who are looking for a good value high quality TV.
