  • would not buy anything from aldi ever again. Apart from a remote everything electrical has failed inc 2 x plasmas, 2 x lcd tv's. lcd portable tv, security camera, 3 x pvr's. recently took one item back and even though i had a bank statement showing proof of purchase they would not entertain me, their policy is receipt only, even though TS said you do not need a receipt.
Also they have brought out a new 30 day return policy, any problems after 30 days you have to contact the manufacture again against consumer law.

    I think the one Jarrod is referring to is this one;

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0787093125.1192731037@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladdmfhegjdkcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=593042&category_oid=-29711

which is 3" smaller and only has one HDMI socket, but the contrast ratio is better and LG's 'XD Engine' image processing technology is well reviewed - if it were a choice between the two I'd choose this one over the Tevion.

    But then I saw this baby;

    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0787093125.1192731037@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccladdmfhegjdkcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=542066&category_oid=-29711

All this for another £30? It's a no brainer!

The Tevion doesn't look such a good deal now does it?!

    :)
is this not a plasma and the aldi tele is an lcd?
my bark is worse than my bite!!!!!!!!

    So?

Plasma is inherently better than LCD at displaying moving images, and at only £30 more for a decent brand and a bigger screen I know which I'd go for. I'm sure that if you had the two side by side fed from the same source the LG would look miles better.

I've never found Aldi or Lidl particularly good value for LCD TVs - there always seem to be much better deals to be had elsewhere, and the problems that people report with them put me off spending big bucks there.

I just don't think £570 quid for a 40" LCD is the great bargain that Aldi want us to think it is.

    :)

    Tevion?

Really, do Tevion really use Samsung screens, Panasonic components and designed by B & O?

Rubbish ! B&Q more like, they use really rubbishy components. It's like comparing a Ford/Vauxhall to a Lexus/Rolls Royce

I have a Tevion LCD & it definitely has a Samsung panel in it.

Don't know about B & Q but it has good FOCUS.
    Nice to save.

Not true, the retailer is liable if the goods are faulty. Small claims court may be your best option here.

I've been caught by this new policy as well, and regardless of the legal position, it's very difficult to argue with a shop manager who is simply following instructions. I had expected this policy to have faced a legal challenge by now, but apparently not. While it is in force, I'm afraid that Aldi can keep their electrical products from now on, however good a deal it might seem to be. The much-vaunted three year guarantee is not quite what it seems.
  • I certainly would never again buy any electrical or relatively expensive items from Aldi since they reduced their long-term, no-quibble policy to 30 days, in view of the enormous amount of effort it took to get a refund on a low value, faulty item - despite it being purchased when their original returns policy was in place.

Aldi's store managers' current position seems to be to try and get you to sort out any problems directly with the manufacturer - at your own expense - under the guise of the so-called 3 year warranty. I would imagine posting a 40" telly wouldn't be cheap.

From my understanding of the Sales of Goods Act, it is the retailer’s (not manufacturer’s) responsibility to sort out problems regarding faults. That’s not how Aldi apparently see it. Which, short of legal clarification by way of case law, could turn out to be difficult, expensive and nightmare-ish situation to remedy if you have forked out a sizeable wad of cash on a now, non-functioning, expensive television.

Unfortunately, the only reduced-risk option seems to be is to avoid purchasing these sorts of products from Aldi in the first place.

When I took my 32" LCD back recently within the 30 day period the manager tried to tell me to sort it out with the manufacturer. I rang Aldi head office - they apologised and rang the manager in question and put him straight on their no-quibble policy.

I got my money back but the experience was disconcerting.

    Agreed.
It's a fact that the cheap LCD & Plasma TVs use older screen panels. Considering how far forward both LCD and Plasma have come in the past 12 months, I'd say its a fool who'd buy a cheap TV right now.
You'll also note that the TV on offer from Aldi is only 768 res ... and not the full HD.

Sadly folk only look at the price, and think because its cheap they're getting a bargain.
Last weekend I bought the latest Panasonic Viera LCD TV (37LZD70), only £300 more than the Aldi TV, but the difference quality will be huge.
Not everything that's cheap is a bargain
  • Here's my updated view on the goings on of this debate

LCD TVs use one of a few screen manufacturers for the screen - only very few exist, and the chances are extremely high that it will be from a company like Samsung or LG.

This Tevion TV is 1080i - not 768, and though indeed it is not "full HD", unless you wish to spend £1200+, none this size are. As I previously mentioned, full HD is not really any benefit unless you have Sky HD or HD DVDs and HD DVD player.

As for Aldi's return policy - well, I can't comment on their customer services as I haven't had to return anything, but my 32" LCD Tevion TV purchased around a year ago has been excellent from day one.

As for the link to a PC World Plasma TV - it's Plasma. It's important to know the differences between Plasma and LCD and not just "so?" as was stated.

Plasma TVs have much better contrast ratios, are better for "moving" images (e.g football), and are dare I say a tad cheaper. However, a "still" image (if you were to pause a movie for example) on screen for more than 15 minutes will probably 'imprint' or 'burn' that image and its shadow will always be visible even when watching something else. You will also have to "top up" the plasma liquid inside the TV every few years to recover brightness.

LCDs on the other hand are slightly thinner than Plasmas (though recently they're becoming quite the same thickness), are less contrast ratios, slightly more expensive, but are much more user-friendly in the sense that the screens are fairly robust and you don't have to be careful in turning it upside down etc (though obviously that's not recommended).

From viewing perspectives, however, plasmas do tend to come out on top.
