SMETS2 vs SMETS1 meter

Not when there are EVs such as the Hyundai Kona now on the market with an EPA range of 258 miles.
As I understand it ,currently those ranges are only achieved with very conservative driving habits. Talking to someone who has a Leaf , he struggles to get more than 150 miles per charge even with moderate acceleration and dual carriageway driving during the week. He wasn't prepared to use it for a drive down to Norh Devon from South Wales recently.:(0 -
How long do batteries keep their range for ?
I mean - after a couple of years- my phone battery only lasts for half of its original time !0 -

Depends on how often the battery is charged. Every time a battery is charged it degrades. We see that effect in mobile phones, rechargeable batteries, car batteries, etc. With a phone battery the first indication of degradation is when the phone no longer charges to 100% or takes a longer than usual time to charge to 100%. This is why batteries get replaced.0 -
First of all there is a huge amount of scare mongering going on by mainly ill informed media causing these issues.
Most people have a smets 2 compliant meter already installed, secure meter fitted by ovo,UW and many others is smets2 compliant its a gray meter with a key pad on has and elec meters,
British Gas,Solarplicity, and a host of many others fit E470,G470 meters the elec has a seperate comms hun that sits beside meter, the elec is white with a green button on top right has meter is an E6 with red and black A and B buttons again smets2 compliant,
Scottish power along with others fit Aclara and Elster meters check list for them but most are smets 2 compliant, as for the meters they can be set to send reads only once every 30 days if you wish, again i would ask you to be objective if you have a credit/debit card stored on your phone that is far worse than snart meters in terms of security so perspective would help in thos situation. No one cares enough about you to warrant a cyber attack on you and there isnt a lot they could do apart from decommission your meters, nothing too serious, as for the rush from companies we are fined aggresively by the government if time frames are not met.
Moving on to the !!!! poor planning and everyone looks on the outside thinkong they could have done better, if you dont know about metering then you best not try and give input as to how it could be improved.
Having stock to cover every possible scenario is very difficult, we as engineers do not know what to expect untill arrival, most customers are clueless as to where or what a cut out os or service head or even some dont know where there meters are, which can lead to aborts or a delay as we try find them extending our time and delaying another job, some jobs are simple and up to regulations some are over 50yrs old and need serious work to make safe.
Do not underestimate the amount of safety issue we fix on a daily basis, form unknown gas leaks to electrical issue which could cause fires, electricians fo not get audited and many leave shoddy dangerous work, ive seen many leave exposed copper, 1 touch and your dead mainly dangerous with kids around, under rated cable which can burn out, gas fires and boilers reburning products of combustions causing co poisning the list goes on and on and everyday complaining people who realy havent the slightest idea what they are talking about spread there incoherent miss concepts to others causing the whole issue, if you dont know do not think you could improve it, many metwrs havent been changed or tested for safety in decades and some need lots of work to be safe again not all can be fitted on day 1.
The cut out is covered by the DNO we cannot touch it apart from make safe until DNO arrive thos can delay the job, meters may have been moved illegally by and electrician who is not covered to exchange only a Meter OP can work on meters, eelctricians can only work from fuse box onwards, be assured the regulations around safety in this field are one of the highest because people have died, yes smart meters are expensive but we must get isage under control and keep moving forward as a society not retreat and go back. Smart meters are safe and work. Watch your engineer and ask questions if your insure of there work ask them to leave simple as that, there will always be some who are not up to standard, but we are human like all of you and make mistakes, and get berrated on a daily basis it seems by people who completely miss understand the industry, most engineers are doing a bang up job and yes it is unorganised but planing goes out the window in this job you must adapt everyday to succeed, if i plan ill fail as i have no idea what to expect once that door is open, what the person is like, what mood, drunk or sober, if im safe in the house, are the meters straight forward or do they need alot of work, do i have the stock i need as it takes a few days to be dispatched. Will there boiler relight, we have to check hundreds of things in your house for safety as we go along the boiler itself has to be checked for at least 10-20 safety issues visually and the same goes for every gas aplliance dont underestimate the amount of work that goes into safety for this and as new issues arise we adapt to ensure safety, we are all gas safe and could go to prison for unsafe situations, name other traders who are held to the same standard there arent many. We audit engineers, our auditors are externally audited, by mocopa the regualting body, every company must pas the Mocopa audit every year, each time by different engineers to ensure the best arent used everytime.
Check the facts people theres alot more going on than simple meter exchanges.0 -

What do you mean by smets 2 compliant?
Of the few people I know who have had smart meters installed, they are now "dumb" because they have switched suppliers.
Most people I have discussed their energy supplies with don't have smart meters, or can't get them installed because they live in a block of flats and/or area where there is a very poor mobile signal (which Smets1 meters require AFAIK)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. OK - So, maybe the batteries last for two years before needing replacement ?
Who pays ? The consumer in that power will go on increasing in price
Who makes additional profits ? These companies who provide smart meters0 -
I would suggest that a read of the NAO Report (Nov18) into smart meter rollout might be educational:
https://www.nao.org.uk/press-release/rolling-out-smart-meters/
Quote: The SMETS2 system consists of many interacting components, several of which are still being tested, or have not yet been deployed or developed, so it may take years before it is known if it works in its entirety. Installation of SMETS2 meters in the North of England and Scotland is also lagging behind the rest of Great Britain due to problems integrating smart meters with communications infrastructure. As of the beginning of November, just 3,000 SMETS2 meters had been installed in the North of England and Scotland, compared to 106,000 in the rest of Great Britain. Unquote
That’s 109k SMETS2 meters compared to 12.5M SMETS1 meters that are installed in households today. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Are sse installing SMETS2 meters? I had SMETS1 installed beginning part of the year and was told would be contacted for SMETS2 but nothing to date. Was hoping to get SMETS2 installed so could switch and be no issues

Even if the £18 saving pa were true (although I don't see any reason as to why it should save the customer a single penny) - the actual cost to the government, and thus to us - the consumer is £374 (plus ongoing replacement battery costs) - so it would take over 20 years to recoup any initial costs - sorry not a very good deal as far as I am concerned....
And the total cost of replacing meters will be a ridiculous £1.1B
And presumably this figure can be doubled when you take into account gas meters as well
So over £2billion - to save not a single penny
How did this happen ?0
