TheBusinessBloke - your first encounter with MLM was 2 years ago - mine was about 10 years ago and have been involved with 3 companies (and am still a distributor for one of them). You are not really in a position to start explaining how great MLM is after so short an experience. There are so many variables involved that you cannot dismiss people who have put in hundreds or thousands of hours of honest, hard work and whose experiences have been very different from your own. I have had a couple of profitless experiences but withdrew before getting too involved. It CAN work but when it doesn't it is not merely a matter of 'nay saying' or negativity it can be rapacious advertisers who promise far more than can be delivered just to keep the mugs coming in. If you don't know that yet, you are in for some nasty surprises.0

Never been a big fan of MLM myself. There are too many SCAMs out there and you have to be careful.
There are a few that are not SCAMs and do work namely the catalogue distribution companies (the big two) that recruit 'Agents' to distribute these catalogues. The 'Agent' makes approx 10-25% on any orders. But its very hard work and to get a decent return on your time, you have to distribute 200 + books a day!0 -
Please don't flame me for this, I'm just writing about my own personal experiences and thoughts on network marketing.
Being a bit hard up and wanting to pay down debt quicker than from the salary of my full time job which I have no intention of giving up, I decided to join a Network Marketing Company. I was given all training materials/manuals, demonstration products & consumable products, enough stationery for the first couple of months and as much guidance and training as I wanted/needed for FREE. You do not earn anything until £300 in sales have been achieved which 'pays' for the products that you are given up front.
We have to submit at least £400 in sales per month and are allowed three 'grace' months out of 12 of submitting less than £400 in sales before you have to restart from scratch.
Yes, there are business tools etc to be used for sponsoring, achieving more sales etc, but these are all totally optional - I have just recruited someone into the business and had none of these tools or accessories, borrowed things from my leader and some materials, my leader has since given me to help with how I want to progress within this Company.
We receive a voucher for £100 of product as a thank-you for recruiting someone into the business and then once we have recruited two people, earn a small percentage of their sales on top of our own - the additional comission pay-out STOPS 3 levels from the bottom of the chain. Regardless of what level you are at, you still have to do £400 per month in sales, don't have to buy anything unless you want to and most of the stationery is Free.
There are opportunities to be entered into draws for cash, cars, holidays etc, but if people don't want to do this they don't have to.
I have won bookings, and have been invited to attend events to promote what I am doing by not being too pushy, in people's faces or a 'second hand car salesperson attitude' to coin a phrase from an earlier poster - I have nothing to hide and act in an honest, open and transparent manner.
I personally, am aiming to earn a small amount of additional money to help with my debt, don't pay for anything from the company unless I have the money sitting in my bank account already and have nothing to hide.
I've been doing this for 6 months now, so not very long, I'm earning a small amount of money, without having to constantly buy products, training, manuals etc, I meet new people and enjoy it - am I stupid or wrong, or just trying to make my own way in life?Virtual Sealed Pot Challenge 2010 Member #70 - £0.95 / £5000 -
Does anyone know or has tried the home working opportunities where you buy a manual for £39.99 and they guarantee a return or you can get your money back? Are they all just a scam?

it's a scam
upfront money = scam
it's probably just tells you how to sell the same book for £39.99Ex forum ambassador

I would say it's a scam. If it wasn't then the seller would be following the manual and making money instead of trying to sell the manual.
The reason they are selling the manual is because they will make more money from that than from following it.0 -
I'm rather pleased I began this thread some time ago, as there is a definite mix of informed comment, uninformed comment, complete cynicism and some open mindedness all mixed in together. Certainly an interesting discussion and I think it has been worth it to have an open forum on network marketing.
Certainly there are a lot of companies out there who have, and continue to, give this industry a bad name; yet one can't argue with success and network marketing is worth in excess of $200 Billion.
A lot of very well known companies now use it to move their products: Body Shop, Virgin, etc, interestingly in Japan one can buy a Toyota Car from your neighbour via network marketing!
As the economists mention the dread word 'recession' more and more (if they say it enough they might make it happen!), people do find themselves in need of greater income. This can offer them that, but it certainly is not an easy option.
I strongly recommend anyone considering getting involved in this business to do their homework; check out every claim made and understand the business so you don't get confused - it will kill off your business faster than anything!
May I recommend this link http://www.scribd.com/doc/4757/MLM-Presentation which will take you to a free site, you can read the first four chapters of this book and it will help you understand network marketing. Unlike those viral marketing sites, this ebook is free and there are no strings or any advertising there.Mike0 -
I got involved in MLM last year with the promise of making a realistic wage and would earn a Fortune - so much that all my dreams will come true!
They wanted £100 for the start up case (comprising: plastic case, notepad, calculator all the sales pitch in a book AND a pen!)
I had to gave a long list of all my family & friends who they contacted trying to get involved in the scheme too, in my downline.
I had to take out a sim card with the promise that I wouldn't have to pay for any calls to other members!! I only knew two of them anyway! (I'm still paying £15.00 a month for it because of the contract yet never once used it!)
I had to pay £14.99 a month for my own web-page too.
I had to listen in on calls (my training!) and phone ups which cost an arm an a leg.
I had to call up people at my expense and try and convince them that they could have all their dreams come true too! I never made ANY money - only paid it out!
I got sucked into trying to earn some real money for my family.
I learnt the hard way - there is no money to be made, only to be paid!Ist Win: 1 week's bed, breakfast and evening meal in Hotel in Blackpool!! :j0
