Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 35
With a promising sunny day ahead we decided to spend the day in St Ives. We had to drop DD3 off there as she is part of the Youth Theatre group, Kidz R Us and had all day rehearsal for Christmas Panto. On the way we called into Sainsburys where we spent £10, not too bad!
We spent a lovely hour on Porthmeor Beach watching the surfers before it became a bit nippy so we moved on to Fore Street for a spot of shopping.
I was amazingly well behaved, I picked up a gorgeous salad in a local deli (which will last me for at least 2 meals) as well as a granary loaf at the nearby bakery.
We continued along and watched our DD3 and her group perform 'Step In Time' from Mary Poppins as part of the St Ives Festival before heading to the Harbour Beach for lunch.
By now the sun was scorching so we did our best impression of being beach lizards soaking up the sun. Our picnic was a bit of a stealth like mission as the sea gull are vicious down here:mad:
This youtube clip not only shows beautiful St Ives but just how cunning the gulls are!

Lunch over we headed to the charity shops but there were no spoils to be had
Once again we went out for a family meal and once again my step Mum treated us all (rather than give us birthday presents, she treats us to meals out when we are all together)
So a lovely day for £8.50 or so (excluding the Sainsbury's shop)"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Good Morning here is the recipe I use for the 'Melting Moments' biscuits
5ozs butter or soft marg (stork is fine)
3oz caster sugar (I whizz up granulated sugar in my blender, cheaper than buying it already ground up to caster sized granules)
2 T'spoons of vanilla essence, OR 1 T'spoon of vanilla extract
5ozs self-raising flour (value flour works as well as the more expensive stuff does , you will sieve it anyway)
some desiccated coconut, or oats, some quartered glace cherries for decoration.
You can roll them in oats or coconut before baking (I like coconut) but they are nice without.
I sometimes add a bit of mixed spice to the mix, sifted in with the flour or some cinnamon for a spicy biscuit.
These will keep crisp up to five days in an airtight tin or lock'n'lock box, but mine never last that long, they are scoffed long before that
Heat the oven to 180c /350f or gas mark 4. grease two baking trays
Cream the butter/marg with the sugar, and beat until light and fluffy. Add the vanilla essence/extract and beat in. Stir in sifted flour and mix well with your fork until a rather sticky dough.
roll into small walnut sized pieces of the mixture and toss in oats or coconut. If the mix is a bit sticky slightly dampen your hands to roll the 'balls' out, bit messy but if you take a teaspoon to dig a bit out, then just roll it around to a small ball shape
Lay on the trays, in rows, leaving enough room between each biscuit so it can spread a little, Press the middle with a fork to flatten slightly you can stick a sliver of glace cherry in the middle of each if you want to decorate them, I do a few, but some people aren't keen on cherries
Bake for around 12-14 minutes until just starting to turn golden brown,NOT dark brown, do not over cook as they catch easily. Remove tray from oven and let to cool for a minute.remove onto wire trays with a palette knife
When you take them off the tray they may seem soft but they do crisp up as they cool. they should be a pale golden colour.
These take less than half an hour to prepare and cook. This mix should give you about 25-30 small biscuits and costs pennies to make.
I have been making these for almost 60 years and my DD's and grandchildren love them
Cheap as chips and twice as nice as shop bought biscuits:):)
all of my grandchildren have over the years helped to make them on rainy days in the holidaysNothing like baking to keep kids amused, even the boys like to make biscuits
JackieO xxSticking with the "Small things" thread to keep up us on the straight and narrow.

Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 36
We were hoping to go to Falmouth today but the weather was too awful and seeing as Falmouth is an hours drive away, it really has to be a lovely day to justify the fuel costs.
On the upside, today was a NSD "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 37
Another week, another work day and a small spend of £5.60 split between Sainsbury's and Tesco.
I'm happy with that :j"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 38
I am a bit of a fresh air freak and at every opportunity I love to be outdoors.
I have wanted to go to Falmouth for quite a while now but all the necessary conditions haven't been right but I woke up this morning and decided that I was going no matter what! Hubby had said the weather wasn't forecast to be brilliant but I felt in my bones that today was the day to go!
We parked in a different part of Falmouth (I always like exploring new areas) and not being a fan of paying for parking we used the opportunity of using the Iceland car park for an hour to get ourselves accustomed to the new area.
We had a lovely walk around, found out some fascinating local history before we popped into Iceland and spent just over a fiver to get free parking.
Leaving we circled the local roads for a free parking space and were amazed to find one very close to where we next wanted to be.
We had a super hour in Wetherspoons chatting and people watching before hitting the charity shops and Trago Mills.
Whoops, we spent just under £30 in Trago but thankfully we don't go there that often!"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 39
A funny old day today at car Rosudgeon Car Boot. Although the weather was better than last week and there were more stalls, the quality of the goods on sale wasn't as good as usual and we bought very little
We left earlier than usual and headed into Penzance where I spent under a tenner in Tesco and Cornwall Hospice Care.
Another fairly LSD and best of all the savings are starting to grow :j"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 40
Heigh ho, heigh ho, it's off to work I go,
With my purse shut tight and though I might
No spend was my choice, don't you know "One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 41
Day 40 was a heigh ho day, today was a ho, ho, ho day as I bought Christmas cards and presents :santa2:
As we get closer to DD1 wedding, time will fly and before we know it Christmas will be thundering towards us so I have started planning earlier than usual so that once we return in November, we are well prepared. Between now and the middle of November we not only have the wedding but we also have a hen weekend, DGD2 Christening and DD1 wedding celebrations back in the UK hence the need to be super organised!
Are you starting to think about Christmas yet?"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0 -
Fiscal Fast - Part 2 - Day 42
Ouch, that hurt :rotfl:
I bought my DGD2's Christening present, hopefully something that she will really treasure :grinheart
and another item for our wedding outfit ticked off
A very High Spend Day but very necessary"One hundred years from now, it will not matter what kind of car I drove, what kind of house I lived in, how much was in my bank account, nor what my clothes looked like but the world may be a little bit better because I was important in the life of a child."0
