Hi HC
If I!!!8217;ve got a glut of carrots I cut them into big chunks, sideways and par boil and then roast. Potatoes, parsnips and carrots together are a good mix, but by themselves are nice too. If you want to spice them up a bit sprinkle a bit of paprika over while cooking.
Soup is also good, but I!!!8217;m the only one in my house that likes HM soup so I end up eating the same type for days.
Or grate into carrot cake . Yum.
Better go this is making me hungry

!
I ate a piece straight from the freezer to try and that was very nice, and I added the rest to my chopped fruit and although it went a bit soft and gooey as it defrosted, it still tasted lovely.
I'll definitely do it again if i find myself with too many bananas!
I freeze bananas for banana bread. Whenever I get one turning black I just throw it in the freezer still in the skin and then when I have enough for my recipe I get them out. I find they turn to mush when they have defrosted which means no mashing lol.0 -

That's a nice idea! I read this after I've just finished making a vat of Moroccan carrot soup which will do about 10 or 12 meals - and it'll only be me eating it :rotfl::rotfl:. I'm going to put some in the freezer at work as I don't have the space here!
I sliced and par boiled the rest and it's in the freezer, but I'll definitely try roasting next time I have carrots to freeze0 -

That's really good to know, I find some weeks all the bananas go really quickly and another week they just sit there, so good to know how to save wasting them0 -
You can also use frozen banana to make ice cream. Just add frozen banana to food processor and pulse for a couple of minues, scrape down and then pulsre again for a few minutes. Eat immediately for soft ice cream or freeze for a while for a harder ice cream.

Welcome Smurphington this is just the place for you ,everyone has been so good at sharing their tips and ideas about how to cut back on waste stuff
The amount of food that gets binned in this country alone would possibly feed a good few million.
Not only is it to me almost criminal, I also think of the amount of stuff that ends up in landfill as the food is often highly packaged.
But the added benefit is that we all end up with a bit more cash in our purses, which is a real plus in these leaner times.
Growing up with war time rationing probably made me more aware of the value of food and the old adage of 'Waste not ,Want not' is a good one.
Sometimes its difficult when something unexpected happens, but for the most part I try to aim for zero wasteage in my budget, clapped out veg soon becomes hearty home made soup which will not only freeze for another day but will be the basis for lunch, or as a precursor to my evening meal ( canny Scots Mum always made sure we either had soup before our main meal or a pudding afterwards never both)
Using veggies instead of meat at least a couple of times a week helps bring down the cost of meals a veggie curry ,lasagne or chilli makes a nice change.
Even the humble egg and chips will streetch your budget to accommodate those days when there is too much month left until the end of the month
Food costs are rising daily it seems, so using it to the best advantage seemes to be eminently sensible.
If you can find them, any of the Shirley Goode cook books are fantastic, as she was a very sensible lady who also knew the value of streetching food.
Good sensible basic cooking with no 50 odd ingredients just 4-5 at most and usually what is in the cupboard it the first place.
I taught both of my DDs to cook plus both of my granddaughters and my five grandsons, and I now have a great granddaughter and hopefully I will live long enough to teach her as well.
With the amount of cooking programmes on TV we should by rights be a nation of experts ,instead we seem to live on ready-meals or take-aways.
I have never eaten or had either as I prefer my own cooking Perhaps fish and chips is the only take away I have eaten in over 70 years
I look in the shops and think, Hmm.. I could make that at half the price and twice the taste. Then go home and have a go So welcome to our happy band of like-minded folk who are doing their bit by not chucking good food in the bin but are finding great ways to use it up, rather than throwing it out, enjoy the ride:):)

Bought a bunch of beetroot, then weather went cooler so cooked dinners to use other veg up, beetroot now going soft so grated it all into a tub to add to salads, now have a broccoli to use up, and some cauli so thinking will make a low carb hummus.Do I need it or just want it.0

Welcome Smurfington, you'll find some great ideas on here!I've half a carton of LL milk to use up and am dithering between a large custard tart or SC rice pudding (which I don't mind eating cold). I think the custard tart will win.
In the end, I made a large jug of custard to go with a hm apple pie that's now defrosting so it's a win-win all round - milk used up and one thing less in the freezer.
I've par-boiled half the ys carrots along with the last bit of swede and they're now in the freezer (filling up the space vacated by the apple pie) but there [STRIKE]should[/STRIKE] will be a few more things coming out this week.
I have a fair few odds & ends in the fridge to use up too and have managed to incorporate all of them into this week's meal plan. Since the weather is forecast to be good all week, there's definitely a couple of salads in the offing and as little cooking as I can get away with!Be kind to others and to yourself too.0
