Today's 'what shall we find in the freezer' threw up (not literally, I hope
) some bacon steaks with a honey mustard butter. i bought them a couple of weeks ago in a BOGOF type deal - they aren't something I'd usually buy and I've been dreading having to eat them since. So i bit the bullet today and we will have them with jacket spud and veg from the fridge - probably carrots and broccoli. That way, if they're horrible then we can just have the jacket spud and veg.
i won't be buying them again, i reckon.
Had bacon and egg for breakfast - yes, more bacon but it would have started to get a bit too old after today and I don't want to waste it.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Using up the last of the cabbage with cheesy mash and a piece of fish from the freezer for dinner tonight, and the last lonely banana with be made into banana custard for pud0

Hello from Ice Station Zebra! It was minus 10°C here at 7am. The snowplough that tried to come up the hill at 11.30 skidded half way up.....
We keep have blizzards...
Soooo, it had to be HM soup for lunch!
YS mushrooms, garlic, sprinkle of chilli n herbs (a mix my friend brought back from Italy and it's very hot!), beef gravy from the freezer, and the heal of some blue cheese. Served with some toasted muffins that were also YS. DH was very quiet while eating the soup so I thought he didn't really like it but he cleaned the bowl with the last bit of muffin and just said, "Yum!".
I have the woodburner going so I shall put my thinking cap on and check out what I can cook on top of it for tea, after I have itemised the fridge stockI have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.0 -

I'd complain, if I were you - the fresh stuff should definitely be longer dated than that. They probably wouldn't take it back but you might get a MOC. In the meantime, I'd try to store it as well as you can and maybe cook/freeze to avoid waste.
Well, "proper" snow arrived overnight, about 6" worth, and today has been a mixture of bright sunshine, blizzards and - at times - both at once! Windy, so drifting too. Temperatures of -2, with a wind chill of -11 / -13. We're officially on a yellow warning today and tomorrow as well. The binmen haven't been today (not surprised) and the postie hasn't been seen. The gritters have been out regularly, twice yesterday and once so far today, but the snow seems to be undoing their good work very quickly. Our local airport is closed, as are many schools. I'm glad we've plenty of foods stocks; just hope the leccy doesn't go off! If it does, then we'll have no way of cooking anything and the CH will be off too.
Boiled egg for brekkie, hm soup and soda bread at lunchtime and salad for dinner tonight. Not especially fancying it right now but at least it will use up most of the lettuce, the last of the spring onions and potato salad. We're having it with sliced gammon from the freezer and I'm sure we'll enjoy it once it's in front of us.Rice pudding + sliced banana for afters.
Keep warm everyone and stay indoors if you don't need to go out.Be kind to others and to yourself too.0 -
Our Tesco's fresh fruit and veg was nearly all short dates but think they're having delivery problems because of the weather. There was also absolutely no fresh milk. Fortunately I didn't need any but was planning on picking up some long life so picked up a 6 pack rather than just a couple of the litre packs I'd intended.

Last of the cabbage used plus some cheesey mash and chicken from the freezer. Last banana made with custard for pud.
Fish from freezer tomorrow night plus sweet potato wedges and green peas. probably tinned fruit and some left over custard from tonight. Plenty of food in the cupboards to use so not fussed about shopping at all0 -
Hi everyone,
Some lo swede & potato mash, 2 slices of ham, quarter of a yellow sweet pepper, 2 mushrooms & last egg - oh what can I do? Oh yes, I know - make something up:) So used last of the vegetable oil (about a tblsp) heated up in a frying pan, chopped up the ham & veggies & fried up with the lo mash. When cooked added the beaten egg & carried on frying until egg cooked - seasoned with paprika & salt. :j Success :j but only a snack so cheese & pickle sandwich using hm bread:) & hm coconut biccies for afters. Currently using up the perishables from the fridge & larder before delving into the freezer. I am killing two birds with one stone as I posted on the New Year, New Plans & New Hopes that I would bake regularly & be more inventive with food
I have to say that I am quite enjoying it even though I am not a natural cook although I can bake a bit

Suggestions please,
I have a bag of pears, about 4 WEEKS past the sell by date and still rock hard.
Do I wait and see if they will ever be soft enough to eat or do you think cooking them is the best option?
ThanksIf you walk at night no-one will see you cry.0 -
if you have the patience then wait ,personally I would probably turn them into a crumble I would peel and slice and put into a little water with a dollop of honey and a dash of cinnamon and cook until just soft then drain and either use in a crumble or a pie (but then I am a pie/crumble sort of lady

You could try poached pears. At its simplest, allow one pear per person (peeled, halved and cored), place into microwave dish, cover with fizzy lemonade or ginger ale and cook for 10 mins. Eat hot or cold. Replace the fizzy with diet soda for diabetics.
Or how about baked pears? Again, one pear per person (peeled, cored and halved), place cut side up in a shallow dish. Place 2 tsp butter in each, drizzle with a little lemon juice. Mix together 2 tsps demerara sugar and ¼ tsp cinnamon, sprinkle over pears. Top each with 2 tsps marmalade. Cover and bake at 180C/Gas 4 for 20 mins or until heated through.
Today DH braved it to go to the local shops for potatoes and fresh milk (short of both), although we would have managed without if needs be. I always have a carton of long life milk in the pantry and I could have substituted the potatoes with rice, pasta or dumplings. He also picked up some butter and a tin of corned beef. They weren't really needed so I asked him why he'd got those and he replied "Well, they were on your shopping list."Bless. He said the pavements were treacherous to walk on and it looked as if the C!op hadn't had their usual delivery so their shelves had quite a lot of gaps in them, especially for bread, milk, F&V.
I'm hoping there won't be any more of the white stuff coming our way but we're still on a yellow weather warning so we'll have to wait and see. The enforced confinement to indoors is making spaces appear in the freezer and cupboards as we use stuff up but there's still lots to go at so we won't be going hungry anytime soon.Be kind to others and to yourself too.0
