Thanks YorksLass I may give it a go. It won't have the 1/4 cabbage that was lurking in the fridge because DH said it was grey and threw it in the bin . I told him that he wouldn't make that mistake again

I decided to swap my dinner tonight, for lunch today, as I am at DDs this afternoon looking after my DGS. So I am full up but saved pudding for tonight which I will have will the soup and crackers instead. If DD or my son-in-law gets delayed coming home, as they do sometimes on Mondays I don't get home until gone 7.p.m. and then its a bit too late to be eating a big meal, so a light snack meal on a Monday night is better for me I think.
Tomorrow night I am at my quiz night in the pub so I don't have to cook as I get fed there :) No shopping needed today at least and only eggs on my shopping list at the moment

On the subject of "to meal plan or not to meal plan" I usually do (on a flexible basis so I can swap meals around if need be). If I don't, I find myself wasting a lot of time trying to decide what to make and get quite cross with myself for being lazy. :(
I do that, too - so that I can swap days about if my lupus is giving me a hard time on a day I'm supposed to be doing something labour-intensive.

I was decluttering the sideboard this weekend and found 2 unopened bottles of wine tucked away at the back - a Merlot and a Chardonnay, both unoaked. We're not wine drinkers so I think they must have been presents at some time or other. The thing is, they are probably about 10, maybe 12, years old! Does anyone think they may be drinkable or alternatively could I use them in cooking? Or should I head in the direction of the sink?

Yorklass - I doubt they'll be any good, even for cooking! I wouldn't use a wine in cooking that I wouldn't drink. However the only way of knowing would be to open them when you want to use in cooking and have a sniff and a tiny taste - it'll probably be like vinegar after that length of time though.

If it's not like vinegar then freeze in icecube trays for later use (it's unlikely you'll use a whole bottle in cooking in one go).

That would not stop my DH, but then they wouldn't even last 10-12 days with him :rotfl: Like joedenise says, do a taste and sniff test. Personally I think they'll be ok. After all some wines are hundreds of years old

Definitely a sniff and taste first, then perhaps freeze in ice cube trays then bag up red wine is particularly nice in SC beef. I am not a great wine drinker either but have around half a dozen bottles in the cupboard that I have won at quiz nights over the past year or so and normally take them with me if I am going to dinner at my sis-in-laws or eldest DDs.My youngest is also not a wine drinker at all. DGS Ben sometimes helps me out as his G/F is French and enjoys wine :) I enjoy a decent G&T occasionally but not often, as I drive almost daily so don't like to take a chance.
HM soup for lunch today with cheese and crackers, greek yogurt with a dollop of honey mixed through it Quiz night tonight so no cooking for me :)

When I cleared out my mum's place I found similarly aged wine.

The really good stuff ages well, but the bog standard supermarket wine sadly does not. I had to throw the stuff away.

Thanks all for the replies about the (forgotten) wine. It seems to be a question of "nothing ventured, nothing gained". ;) I'll do the sniff & taste test and then decide whether to use or not. The first challenge though will be to get the corks out of the bottles! :rotfl:

Long time lurker. Although we are luckily financial relatively stable, I am aware how much money we fritter away by wasting food. We are both (just the two of us) fussy eaters and although I try to mealplan, we often change our mind on the day, resulting in food getting thrown out.

I do try to freeze left overs / non eaten food but also end up throwing bits out because they have been ages in there or because I need space for other stuff 😣

Am inspired by this thread though, plus the freezer needs defrosting so will try to use up freezer/fridge/cupboard stock and limit food shopping.

Dinner tonight will be mash, have some broccoli that needs using up and whatever meat I can find in the freezer. Am pretty sure there is leftover cooked ham from Christmas so that will be a start ☺️
