It appears that: if you don't use an account for 18 months it becomes "dormant" on their system. Cue lots of faffing about if you get to that stage... so I'd always just left it in the "must get round to" pile of things I could do one day.
But then it got worse. I went to the bank to say "this account, here's my ID, this is me, let's get this sorted" - only to be told my current account had been closed "as that's the law" and they can't tell me what was in there, it's all now gone into a Govt black glory hole of money.... so now I need to go through to formally apply for MY money, from an account I didn't close.....
I bet lots of old people's money will disappear as relatives dealing with their stuff get thwarted trying to know what's what and resurrect any accounts people had money sitting in... because that's what you were lead to believe: Put money in the bank, when you need money you go and get it. Not so now, it appears! If you leave it in there, it's gone, account closed - and you have to go through some kind of rigmarole to get YOUR money back!!
On the plus side.... my ISAs were still present/intact and the savings account (all £75 of it). And they totted up the ISAs and I had £3k more than I'd completely guessed at, so that makes my buying budget just a little less critical and worrying....
Hate banks. Never understand them. Username, magical security thing, little code box, now we've changed and you have to submit 2 secret answers, then the login changes and you need a secret answer and a box ... and stick the card in - and log in online... and ... give up. And you can't phone as you still can't answer the questions they'd ask you
I am going to go back to ONE account.... ONE .... the rest will go under the mattress
My magic number thing is unique [First Direct] and doesn't need a card to work, has it's own code programmed in I assume. I have plenty of the other type and your right, they work with any old bank & card
And of course, I found my ISA had vanished once I was logged in, which is the reason I wanted a code to ask them where it went. When I 'phoned it was as you say, silly me leaving money untouched in an ISA and not chucking more in or withdrawing it
The vanishing ISA is being "looked into", but I got fed up listening to soothing music while that happened. I only wanted to check sort codes before I moved it elsewhere for a better, but still paltry, interest rate
On a more positive note, the Glory Hole tidy up has moved forward, now I've got plastic storage shelving in, and sorted into logical items, plumbing, electrics, etc
Dinner remains as large pizza, now defrosted only needs bunging in ovenEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
I got told off for swearing on here earlier today.:D Well, not swearing, hiding swearing I think they called it. They want to keep this a "family friendly" forum.
I'm sure a lot of kids are reading this forum while checking on their investments and the stock market.:rotfl:
Anyway. I just had a snack of roasted chickpeas flavoured with salt and vinegar and then a kiwi fruit.:)0 -

In my opinion, not that you asked for it.... it's up to the parents to monitor what their kids are viewing, and we shouldn't be forced into letting them skive off what some laughingly call "a job".0 -
Wednesday
. Please try and stay away from the sin bin :rotfl:
Do if I understand you correctly PN we're being actively encouraged not to save   I've squirrelled money into various saving pots depending on what's the best interest and have my easy to hand savings. I sometimes wonder on the benefits of on line bank accounts and online banking, I'm surprised they don't have to let you know and give you time to action  when I use to pop into the BS they would tell you these things or warn you  I think I'll be investigating my bank accounts over the weekend, just because I don't touch it doesn't mean I've forgotten about it. I once told a young chap at the BS that interest rates were so low I was putting it all under the mattress and then had to reassure him I was joking
We [STRIKE]wasted[/STRIKE] spent some time watching the building site next door install a crane it was a all day jobthey're building a seven storey building next to the office so it's a big crane and from our 5th floor window we had a good view. Interesting to watch but slightly concerning as for the most part they weren't wearing safety harnesses and hanging off it to bolt on the next piece  there was a mobile crane to build the crane :rotfl:
I was too disorganised to make breakfast and lunch last night when I got in and hit my snooze button too many times this morning  so I was a little rushed this morning i grabbed fruit for breakfast and the last 3 mini crustless quiches for lunch with a handful of tomatoes and sugar snap peas.
I need to pop out for an hour and will eat dinner when I get back, it will probably be bacon and egg or maybe just a bacon sandwich as I picked up some nice bread YSLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin0 -
I think I'll be investigating my bank accounts over the weekend, just because I don't touch it doesn't mean I've forgotten about it.
I also had a little cash ISA I'd bought each year 07, 08, 09, 10, 11.
The savings account still existed.
The ISAs still existed.
I put my current account cheque book through the counter window for her and I said "this account" and she told me that it wasn't showing on their system whatsoever. It's probably not been used for 5-6-7 years or so, but, even so, I expect money in the bank to still be there even if I open a drawer in 30 years' time and discover a cheque book I'd forgotten about!
It didn't exist for her to view on her system/screen. It wasn't there and greyed out, there was simply no evidence of it whatsoever. I said "that's nuts". She said "it's the law". I'd not used it, so to prevent people having lots of little bits and pieces here and there apparently this is what they do.
I bet many people have an old account with "a few bob or so in it, just in case/for emergencies; no point closing it, might come in handy if I'm stuck". They'll get a shock
I have to go to this website https://www.mylostaccount.org.uk/ - to find it to get it back!
Why did I not notice/do nothing sooner? Because everything's paperless these days and I'd not changed my address with them yet - and I'd not logged on for about 5 years.
All perfectly normal behaviour in my opinion.0 -
Good evening everyone,
A forgotten £3k is nice PN - wish it was me.:)
I think (may well be wrong) that if you have on-line banking, log in every so often and open the account details it should stop them going dormant so that's what I do! I have numerous pots with various places some of which are static re in/out but so far none have gone dormant on me though it's 18 months+ since I added or removed anything from them.
Lol Wednesday nearly on the naughty step hope you've finished your lines.:rotfl::rotfl:I've had a few words in posts turned to !!!! by the board all of which were being used in their correct context. I do quite like that this is not a sweary place but "hidden swearing" cracks me up, if they are old enough to interpret the actual word intended they probably use it in the play ground;). Definitely a day for visitors here a planned one and an unexpected one at seperate times. Both very welcome though. It's been overcast but warm and pleasant enough to sit out, drink tea and have a good natter. I missed my afternoon "feet up" though so tired tonight. Three of the ready cucumbers have gone to good homes:).
Cake was consumed late morning (some of the one my friend made that froze) so lunch was just a couple oatcakes with pate & cucumber, some baby plum tomatoes and a handful of cherries. As I knew I would be having cake breakfast was a hard boiled egg instead of my usual toast and a flat peach .
Tonight I'm having what we used to call in Home Ec "Tuna Neapolitan" - pasta, veggies and tinned tuna in a sauce made from a mix of a tin of condensed tomato soup & cheese sauce. I had cheese sauce in the freezer so a nice easy meal though their will be LOs which I may have again tomorrow as my sis & I are off to my Dad's for another clear out before a cleaning company come in on Saturday.
Last night's lamb was superb well worth the cost and it lovely with the summer veg. I managed to get the fat nice an crispy without overcooking the meat and it was just on the rare side of medium that I like.Just as well I only cooked the one steak or I would have found it very difficult to avoid scoffing any others.;) There are 3 more in the freezer and I reckon another one will get defrosted when the next courgette is ready, if I'm lucky the Ayrshire tatties will be in full flow and I can buy some decent ones without having to re-mortgage to have with it.

Thanks Caronc, that makes sense, I do try to log on and visit my money :rotfl:
I once had a real homebody of a cat who would completely disappear when I had a vet appointment, I use to have to make her appointments out of the house so she couldn't hear
Dinner was bacon, fried egg and toast unfortunately at the last minute transferring from pan to plate I broke the yolk  however the bacon was proper bacon from W*itrose meat counter nice and thick with no white gunk and I brought just 2 rashers so nothing left to have to finish off, I know the last of the big spenders :rotfl: luckily W*itrose staff are too polite to comment
Caronc thanks the link I'm now trying not to be sucked down the wormhole of The Big Yin on YouTubeLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin0 -

Tried to get bedroom fan to work with remote in the night - no good, checked battery etc and tried it downstairs but still no good, made enquires on various helpdesks and gave to dd to take for s-i-l to look at but as I could only find one of the socket parts (there were 3 so goodness knows) I went and bought new pair yesterday. These said they would work through walls so one in bedroom and one in downstairs which does not get so hot. Tried last night and then from bedroom this morning I clicked to start downstairs one, it worked, so remote can stay upstairs and I can switch downstairs one on but then off from actual fan but remote will be handy if I forget to turn fan off when I go tobed. If previous one id fixed then good oh too. Was planning on making meal with the biryani neighbour gave me last night so got out of freezer but then had a job which involved getting a meal out so just had biryani on its own for supper. Bought some fresh veg so having chicken portion tonight maybe with orzo or cous cous. I like orzo because it is easy to leave to soak through and then zap in micro later, almost as easy as cous cous. Will get a square of the cake I made and froze for after dinner. Not sure yet what for lunch. will make some rolls this a.m. as bread all gone bar 2 small end of loaf slices which I could have with some tuna maybe, too small to have with baked beans.0
