That's terrible candygirl no wonder you were:mad::mad:
How hard can it be make/cook your burger decently even if the "burger maker" was kaput?
Glad you enjoyed the chilli PN even if you did have too much cheesy bread:)

Tonight definitely feels like the coldest it has been so far this winter. I had to ramp the heating up higher it's been yet as if I wear anymore layers I'll not be able to move!

I feel a bit sick now , though mashed up cold chick peas shouldn't technically poison me :o

Thanks for the sofa advice guys :) I've a throw on it which hides a multitude of sins some thanks to a couple of kittens I looked after for a couple of weeks last year  let's just say there is a reason why this time I rescued a 5 year old cat and didn't go down the kitten route again :rotfl:

I think when I need to get rid of it I will speak to a small local upholstery company as well as a local charity to see if any one can upcycle it as it has a good carcass. If not I have a saw and I'm not afraid to use it :D re the new sofa one of my other sisters reminded me I have plans to decorate my lounge / dining room next year so do I want a new sofa when I've builders replastering etc

Dreary damp day today so I've stayed indoors and done some sewing and cooking :) Lunch was just a couple of boiled eggs which needed eating as they just passed the float test. I made some split pea and ham soup for lunches next week, Caronc do you do yours on the hob or in the slow cooker? I haven't made it for a while but even through I soaked the peas over night they still took forever to cook on the hob. Just put some in a container for lunch tomorrow and it's definitely a rib sticker.

Dinner was pull beef ragu, thanks for the idea Caronc :) one ox cheek made enough for four good size portions so two have gone in the freezer and one for tomorrow or Tuesday. Decided to make steak and kidney with the shin tomorrow and freeze it so I don't overdose on beef :rotfl:

I usually make mine in my pressure cooker as, like you, I find they take an age to cook especially if they have been in the cupboard for ages, both on the hob and slow cooker. I've started more or less cooking the peas first in stock (18 mins in the pressure cooker with no soak or overnight on low in the SC presoaked) then adding the veg and giving it 5 or so hours in the SC or another 18 mins in the pressure cooker as I found that worked best for me. They are a bit more faff than lentil soup but really worth it IMHO:). When my Mum used to make it she used to cook the peas in with the ham hock or bacon ribs etc. for hours one day and then finish with the veg the next. Leave it overnight and we'd have it on the third day (and 4th if there was any left). It never saw a fridge :eek:but we didn't have central heating and in the winter when she made it the kitchen was as cold as one if not colder at times:eek:.

Glad the ragu worked, it's so rich that one cheek goes a long way so very economical even though the so called "cheaper cuts" have gone up a lot in price in recent years since they became more popular again:mad:.

Thanks Caronc, next lot will be done in the pressure cooker :) I remembered today why I stopped cooking it. I remember when we got our first fridge I was 6 or 7 it wasn't too bad in the winter but not so good in the summer I still sniff milk before using it :rotfl: we all survived :)

The last few years what used to be considered cheap cuts have become very popular with TV chefs so the prices have gone up.

Yep I'm definitely was brought up on "sniff-not sure-bring it to a rolling boil for 10 mins and hope for the best" family when I was young.;) We were healthy as kids and have good digestive constitutions as adults, but I'd rather have central heating and pop stuff in the fridge or freeze it any day:).

I would prefer not to go back to ice inside the windows and coats on the bed to keep warm :rotfl: my mum shopped more often especially during the summer so food wouldn't go off

Yes definitely would rather not go back to wearing more clothes to bed than during the day and inside icicles:eek:
  • An article for us from today's papers:

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-6427283/My-2-049-penalty-swindled-single.html

The more of this sort of article there is the better - it helps to raise awareness. We've now got a name for it too "single tax".

I learnt a new fact there - I knew I paid 200% of the amount a coupled-up person would on insurance. I hadn't realised it could actually be even more than that - ie a deliberate single person penalty (on top of having to pay the whole bill).

More reason than one then that one of the definitions of reaching adulthood imo is imitating that famous star (wasnt it Marilyn Monroe??) that went to bed in just "Chanel No. 5 and a smile"?

    - albeit minus the Chanel No. 5 these days (having read about how it's produced)...

Definitely one of the advantages of adulthood - being in charge of the home temperature...and I can remember (as a child) promising myself "When I grow up I'm going to have a warm home and eat fruit whenever I want to"...
