I hope it does not give you a kitchen that looks like the Valentine's Day massacre should the valve fail and pressurised beetroot liquid sprays everywhere. Fingers crossed for you

    :eek::eek::eek:

Thanks Farway off to try it with just water first :rotfl:

  • Re fruit going from unripe to "gone over" and no "happy medium" time in between - then it's good to add a little bit of water, little bit of sweetening (honey/molasses/whatever one uses), little bit of suitable spices (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, etc) and stew briefly.

Result = bit of compote that can be served on top of something like porridge.

Question for the day - I've been browsing articles/YouTube channels re the benefits of using fermented rice water to help thicken/strengthen hair and have decided to have a go at making it. Seems easy enough. Fermented is deemed preferable - and so that means leaving rice soaking in water for, say, 24 hours and then draining off the water and using that rice water to spray on hair and leave to soak in for a bit. Now there are different opinions on which rice to use - though it's common for them to say "Any rice will do".

So, I'm guessing that rice left soaking in water for 24 hours to do that fermenting is still perfectly edible. I'd rather not throw away the rice if I can find an edible use for it. I took the precaution of buying cheapie white rice to start with - though the rice I eat is organic brown rice. I'm guessing that, either way, (ie whether it's cheapie rice or "my" rice) that one can still cook it up and eat it in the standard way. I'd prefer not to have "waste it" by throwing it away.

So - has anyone made fermented rice water for their hair and, if so, did you cook and eat the leftover rice?

Mind you - I'd also be glad to hear the verdict on it as a beauty treatment too - as I've seen various different women doing this on YouTube and all of them have the sort of hair we don't have (ie black and thick, etc, etc). None of them have mousy or blond fine British hair - but I'm guessing this works for us as well? As mine used to be mousy and fine and these days is white and a bit flyaway chucked into the equation as well.

omg, that reminds me of the time in 1977 when an old prestige blew the weight and pea soup landed on the ceiling, I kid you not. These modern ones have more than one safety feature, or I wouldn`t use one

Allotment on and off all morning so lunch was easy, luscious pork burger and salad. Oh those costco online burgers are fab, I will get them again. Tea, gooseberries, granola and yoghurt. I am just baking 3 small rhubarb crumbles, 2 to freeze and one for the fridge

House is so lovely and cool with the shading and I am gliding slowly in a cool airy dress, no fast moving today

I am giving up on house hunting, again. RM will send me alerts and that will suffice

I brought the pressure cooker approx 2 years ago I've avoided the old type for years because I too remember the days of exploding weights and cooling them under the tap. The electric ones are so much easier although it's kinder to cats to ensure they're not in the room when you release the pressure :rotfl: it seems to be working ok with just water no explosions so will risk the beetroot now. If you hear of an explosion in The SE it will probably be me :D

Another shrew brought in this afternoon after much shouting and swearing when it ran over my foot twice :eek: the cat took it back outside. I rescued it by bringing in the culprit and we're both now suffering from the door being shut in the heat. He's spent the last 15 minutes checking to see if he left it here :rotfl: me I'm sitting here with palpitations :o it's good to know my neighbours would react to my screams  I shouted, swore, slammed doors all with the back door opened, no reaction from either side and their both home :rotfl: Not my usual behaviour

  • Brambling - LOL at your cat again. But I must admit I'd be very tempted to ring on those neighbours doorbells and say "Just letting you know I'm okay - as you must have heard me hollering and wondered what was going on:cool:". I don't think I could resist the temptation to see if they looked shamefaced....

Money one side is 86 so he would have to hit any attacker with his stick :rotfl: but seeing as I'm mid terrace they would have heard even if the door had been shut  a shout over the fence to check I was ok would have been reassuring

The cat tried to make a bid for freedom out the bathroom window he's now sulking on top of the wardrobe. He could go out the catflap but will only use it if held open with string, it's a bit of a learning curve with him.

It is now getting very dark, we're not expecting rain but it looks stormy

Still scorchio here, although it's now "early evening cooling down time" - and, inside here, I've lost the sun in this room for the past 3 hours, so it's cool enough anyway. I've got the front door wide open ... and I've an additional pair of patio doors and three smaller windows I could open if I needed more air ... and a tower fan I bought the other week (not used yet) ... but it's not hot in this room at all.

I had the second egg/salad sandwich .... and I'm awaiting the final minutes of cooking time on the chicken in batter chinese leftovers, which I'll be serving with 1/3rd of the plain chow mein ...and adding some instant hot curry sauce to the side of the plate (ate all the sweet/sour last night as it's best straight away and not reheated).

I finally made my beetroot and goat cheese tart tonight and it was worth the wait (even if I say so myself) the cheese was mild and not goaty :D I added a layer of red onion sweated down with rosemary to the base and served with roasted asparagus and some broccoli. There's enough to take in for lunch tomorrow with salad. It probably would have fed three but I went back for more :D

The dark clouds from earlier have gone so just really hot still. Just have to start thinking menu plan for next week now, sometimes I think my mothers' way of if it's fish it's Friday, if it's sausages it's Saturday and if it's roast it's Sunday etc had it's benefits :rotfl:

  • Well now I'm tying up the last "odds and ends" basically (for now at any rate) on my house/garden = various bits of organisational planning.

So now thinking the best way to deal with spates of cba re food might be to write up 2 A4 lists and put on my fridge door. One for light meals and one for main meals. This time I shall make sure I note what recipe book/website I've seen the recipe on and write underneath any ingredients I don't "always have in". Think that might be one way to get myself to bother properly at least some of the time.

So, for the record, tonight's dinner was a pasta dish with tomatoes and courgettes basically from one of my newer cookbooks. Scattered a bit of "parmesan equivalent" over the top of it. Hmm....not too bad. So that's one crossed off the main meals list.

oh strange, I was thinking about a simple outline bm food plan before I came on here but not a precise plan. I keep a notebook for breads but not all bread recipes turn out the same. I cannot be doing with a full menu plan, for me. Some things are becoming edible on the allotment and troughs, will be able to take baby cabbages, baby salad and chard leaves this week, will save me money

My plan will be simply in days ie veggie, meat, fish. Fish 2-3 times a week and that includes tinned fish. Meat 1-2 times a week and the rest would be veggie

I need a veggie day today, had pork yesterday. Breakfast was cheese slice on toast, love that esp with a tasty cheddar. Lunch will be leaves and outer lettuce leaves from allotment lettuces, to form a salad base with herbs, cuc and tomato and sprinkled beans. Some nuts for afters. I am not needing a green drink now because greens are coming into their own

Must get dressed get my bike out, take my knife and container and go get some leaves before I am the one wilting
