Looks set to be another summer day here today - and I'm guessing I'll get a bit hot whilst exercising today. Fortunately/unfortunately? for me I rarely find it too hot for me in this country.:rotfl:
Just had my first strawberries of the year as part of the topping for breakfast porridge. Duly eaten along with some of the last of last years apples (ie from the freezer - as apple puree). Looks like I'm going to have LOADS of fruit this year. Still - one can't have too much of a good thing - as any surplus will always come to use somewhere (eg given away). I've noticed a couple of regular "recipients" of garden surplus are already starting to look hopefully at me wondering...
EDIT; Done daily inspection of "new" stuff I'm growing. The fig tree I got about a week ago had me thinking "Oh dear...." about it - but is starting to look "respectable" now (not that I'm doing any more than hoping for figs from it this year LOL). Doing well and time to transplant my little seedlings are amaranth, sea beet, Japanese beefsteak and Bucksthorn plantain. New Zealand spinach and tree cabbage finally starting to turn into seedlings. Alexanders - not a sign still.
I've planted trays of seeds of spinach beet, lambs lettuce, mixed lettuce and not a single sign (though they should be fast-growing) and not much sign from the tray of rocket. Wondering if I should have just scattered those seeds in the garden - but I don't feel quite confident enough yet to tell the difference between weeds and "my own plants" when they first start growing yet. I am now familiar with a noticeable number of the local weed plants once they get to a couple of inches high - but still working on my familiarisation. Not quite confident yet when they're smaller than that on "what to leave" and "what to pull out".0 -
Scorchio here. So many things I could/should be doing... managed a few bits of weeding, just 1/4 of a tub's worth (loose) ... but every little helps.
I have bread ... so I expect I'll have scrambled eggs on toast at some point. Might go the full hog and open a tin of beans just for the excitement value
I still have two quarters of quiche that need to be eaten or frozen... see how that works out as I all comes down to "what I fancy" combined with a lot of CBA... that eventually gets something onto a plate.0 -
So good to be keeping on top of the allotment this year, hardly a weedlet and any I see get hoe-ed pdq. Outer lettuce leaves picked and enough for 2 meals also ample chard leaves, fordhook which doesn`t bolt and keeps on giving. Veggie wash used from now on not just water, seeing the random bird poops on the allotment. . One cap in 5 litres water and I wash 2 lots of greens in that, then rines and bag for fridge. I know it works, there was a small caterpillar in the rinse and the soak water always looks a bit grey
spinach LO ready to cook down, too much for salad, LO spring greens rescued, outer leaves removed good leaves washed and shredded, will now keep 7-10 days in a vac container. So thats me done, except for the one medium remaining beetroot
Hot fresh coffee now and then to the post office. Lunch, salad and I have some rhubarb crumble with greek yoghurt. It is such a turnaround from cold weather cooking, in fact I must be sure to use up any hm ready meals, won`t need hot food for a while
I am on a no spend mission for two weeks, so soya beans are soaked and I have done too many, will have to freeze soaked portions. For soyabella, to make soya milk for this afternoon, to cool and refrigerate, for breakfasts and granolas0 -
Good morning everyone,
:rotfl::rotfl:re the shrew Brambling though not re the neighbours not checking your ok:(.
My son arrived safely and the weather held so we got a good sit out in the garden with a large G&T:D. I cooked the chook as planned but had it with salad and greek pitta instead of cooked veg as it was so warm. He's currently off for a run with his mate and if it stays dry aims to pressure wash my consevatory roof this afternoon.
Chicken & avocado salad for lunch, not sure about dinner tonight yet.0 -
It started off sunny/hot, but then went a bit overcast and humid.... which has sucked all the energy from me. I also ended up doing 1½ hours of hedge trimming by hand, then breaking it all up small and lugging a huge trug + 2 sacks to the tip, so I changed my plans as my back's a bit achey ...
I had ¼ quiche, chips and some beans I found in the fridge
I've also scoffed some chocolate covered peanuts and some fruit pastilles.
So humid, I just want to snooze really.0 -
Afternoon all. Like PN's weather here, now close but a bit breezy.
Up a bit later today, back's a bit achey despite co co codamol sarnie;) May avoid bendy gardening today
I don't meal plan, the nearest I get is look in fridge & think "That needs using up" or mooch around SM and spot a YS that "could" turn into a meal. Very much meals of the moment here, one ingredient is often CBA:)
Breakfast was usual porridge, banana, honey & HM yoghurt
During mooch in town, instant meal plan, spotted yummy punnets of local strawberries, RFQS, 69p, 250g approx. That's today's pud planned, with some of my HM thick yoghurt. The strawberries in my garden are not ready yet:(
Lunch, bog standard cheese & salady sarnie
Dinner follows my normal planning, look in fridge & think "That needs using up" In today's case it is LO corned beef hash. I think I'll nuke it and pop a couple of fried eggs on top with a splodge of brown sauce
With the YS strawberries to follow
Glad to see you have your fig tree Money, unless there are figs already on it it will be 2019 at the earliest. Mine are swelling nicely at the moment
Not so lucky with my cherries, I only have 4 this year after the snails snaffled all the blossom:mad: I've put some mesh over those 4 to at least ensure I get them and not the birdsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
Really lethargic, I'll blame the barometer or something... tried to snooze, but couldn't settle. It's like having a severe headache, without the pain.
Just spread some margarine on two pieces of bread and made a coffee.0 -
EDIT: Still can't settle, so opened the bag of prawn crackers I got from the Chinese. It's one of those places that puts a free bag into your takeaway bag, not something you order.... I'd never buy them! Big bag it is, whatever your order, for 1-4 people you get one bag, so it's a time when a single person "wins" as you get a whole/big bag of them to yourself0

I'm not bargaining on any figs this year Farway - as I've only just got it. It does have several tiny figs on it - but I'm not going to hold my breath on them. Just hoping that the tree, as a whole, grows at a reasonable rate - as my main reason for getting it is purely for decoration. So the figs will be in the nature of a bonus.
Anyways - the garden has got to a stage now where it's starting to look attractive - so coffeebreak is often sat outside now and thinking just how far I've come (ahem...and how much money I've spent:eek::eek:) on making it be a "garden". It's taken a LOT of effort in a variety of respects to get to this stage.
Anyways - lunch today was 2nd portion of that pasta/courgette/tomato dish from yesterday and there's about half a portion left. So I guess tomorrow's lunch will probably consist of that half portion and some new potatoes.
Right - must work out a few more dishes I plan on trying....0 -
Evening all,
Yesterday I was gardening at the front all morning, the soil is parched dry, I had a ham salad baguette half an the other wrapped for work Tuesday, I forgot I was out today.
I cooked a full chicken for tea dgson and I had it with the last of the jersey royals and salad, sat in the garden.
Today I met up with friends I used to work with, we meet 3 or 4 times a year, I had sea bass with crushed pots and cauli broccoli carrot and a bit of sweet potato, very nice but a small piece of fish, will stick to the salmon fillet next time. My friend had cod and it was huge!!!
We sat outside after eating and shared a bottle of wine and had a catch up.
I've just had a gf thin with 2 gf fish fingers and cheese for tea, and I'm having Greek yogurt with raspberries and kiwi now.
Money - I know what you mean re the cost in the garden:eek: there was nothing but grass when I moved in ,it's beautiful but glad I can't remember what I've spent.
Did you get the fig tree locally or online?
I'm not good at growing food but everyone on here makes me envious, and wondering if I should try again.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0
