PN Bit of a blow for your HM, must be a lot like him around who thought it wouldn't touch them and future secure

The reality is, some people do well - and then they hit 40.  Once you hit 40 if you're well connected and/or can hold onto your employment, it's a breeze.  If you LOSE your job, especially in a catastrophic market crash situation, you can then find that "that's it" for you, forever.... as you're no longer hired as they hire younger people.   You can't control if you'll lose your job most of the time.... and you can't change your contacts.  So, once you're 40 it's a permanent lottery of hoping you don't get laid off.

Even if you can retrain (few opportunities, massive cost), you're still in interviews facing the same hidden age barrier.

    Rain at last, and cooler.
Stay in day today, expecting a parcel plus the @sda delivery later,
Not yet had an update on what I'm getting, they normally send an e mail with what has been picked from the shelves, which may not be what you really want as a sub, gives time to think about it & reject on arrival

Usual sod's law, no sooner had I ordered delivery from @sda I received a fiver off offer from Morries, expires this weekend so no chance of rolling it over :'(

Porridge breakfast, nearly out of yoghurt so I do hope replacement arrives today
Lunch, probably another cheese & salady sarnie
Dinner, last of the LO SC banger & beans thingy. It does nuke well & LOs mature nicely.
Could be a repeat of apple & cheese later, even better now I'm using my own apples
I had a "Champion" last night, must have caught it a peak ripeness & flavour, still a few more on the tree

I was invited to dinner at my sister's and enjoyed a roast chicken dinner followed by apple crumble and custard 🙂
That sound ideal meal, especially if someone else cooks it :)

Sorry I don't agree PN and I appreciate we are not in a normal situation with CV job cuts so the world is a different place but previously to this I think it's more like 50 when it becomes more difficult but not impossible and in recent years the 18 - 25 age bracket have had just as many problems as they don't have experience.  I was made redundant at 49 after 25 years working for the same company and was jobless for a month which included HR taking 2 weeks to sort out my current role, although I did have a notice period to job hunt as well.  A friend of mine at 50 was made redundant at the same time (different company and location) and was the same in fact she had a couple of jobs to chose from.  These days you don't put your DoB on your CV and try to avoid anything which gives too much away about your age.   I knew a manager who told me (and I told him off) that he would think twice in hiring a younger woman because of Mat Leave and then child care issues where as a women older 40 is less likely to need a year off.

The problem especially for men can be separation/divorce especially if they have children in that they tend to be the one who moves out of the family home and needs to find the income to support two homes especially with rents so high.  Not trying to be insulting but if he had a good well paid job as you say he was and was living in HMO it sounds like there could have been something going on ie divorce, addiction, debt etc

Farway - food always tastes better when someone else cooks it, my sister will admit to not being a fancy cook but her chicken roast dinners are always very good and she makes a lovely traditional pud  :)  My turn next as I have a YS chicken in the freezer they can help me eat.

Not a good start to the day as the milk turned as it hit my tea :s  it was well within date and unfortunately half full, so emergency dash out to get more I'm not nice if I don't get a proper cuppa in the morning.  I popped to the petrol station to avoid the school traffic and I hadn't put petrol in the car since the night before I left for Dorset when I filled it up so it was just above the red.  At least it had stopped raining although it's definitely thinking about it again now, hopefully it will be easier to plant my bulbs if it does  :)

I've LO roast beef to use so the plan for lunch is beef and watercress wrap with a dollop of horseradish dinner will be LO nasi goreng with LO tenderstem broccoli so a nice easy day today.

    Good morning everyone,
I worked with unemployed people  living in  economically deprived areas for a large chunk of my working life and in my experience younger people found it harder than older ones to find work unless there were other factors involved.  Quite often older workers were in better position to even temporarily take on lower paid work and many post-redundancy many actively looked for something less stressful even if the wages were much poorer. Hopefully things will work out okay for your HM PN
Yummy sounding meal Farway,  it's hard to beat roast chicken dinner followed by crumble.
Brambling the cannelloni was lovely (though very filling) and would definitely work well as a lasagne. In the end I didn't make a full batch as I had fewer mushrooms than I thought I had. A CFO spare has been frozen and there's some LO filling as well as I ran out of cheese sauce.
There was a tough of frost first thing and it's to dip lower tonight so I had a rummage round the bramble patch  earlier and picked another bowlful before they got frost nipped. It's a nice and bright day now though still pretty chilly.
Sausages for dinner though what with is tbc, lunch will be a sarnie made from the last of Monday's chicken with salad and fruit.

I found a job in August well before my redundancy was finalised. The IT sector still has a shortage of people - in fact all the Covid changes have made it worse. Age isn’t necessarily an issue in tech... COBOL programmers are being dragged out of retirement at the moment to help retire old systems and train new people in ancient programming language! While there have been redundancies due to company-specific circumstances most experienced IT professionals are finding work pretty quickly.

I’m living on soup at the moment due to a dental bone graft on Monday. My selection is red, orange, yellow or green ☺️
  • I have had a Gregg's vegan steak bake and a sandwich so far today.

I will make a vegetable and chickpea coconut curry later and have it with quinoa instead of rice. Mango chutney and cucumber. I'm getting hungry thinking about it.

Update received on my delivery, 4 subs, all upwards at same price as cheapo choice.
One catch is the deodorant although initially dearer is smaller size [150ml V 250ml], but subbing premium tinned ham for cheapo chopped pork mix I don't mind
Nothing left out as "unavailable", maybe the reported panic buying is just a somewhere the DM lurks?

  • I stopped ordering from Asda as they used to bring so many subs every time!

I walked past a man today who was shouting hysterically saying to his friend that there was going to be panic buying and then rioting (!) here soon. :D

    Good morning everyone,
Properly frosty here this morning - I had to pop the CH on for a bit before I could face braving the bathroom for a shower. It's beginning to melt now but there's no doubt winter is on it's way!
We had a tasty dinner last night of bangers, beans, hash browns and roasted toms topped with a good splodge of HP. It was lovely for a change. Yesterday I made a quick pot of broccoli, potato and gorgonzola soup, we'll have some of that for lunch with HM rolls from the freezer.  Ragu from the freezer tonight with pasta and salad.
Our local Morrison's has popped a notice on FB saying they have brought back restrictions on a number of items. I need to finalise my Tesco order today, I wonder what items on my list will be out of stock?
