Good evening everyoneunrecordings wrote: »In other news word arrives from the kitchen that those dried poppadums / papad (in fact these with the psycho bunny on the front - https://www.redrickshaw.com/products/lijjat-black-pepper-papad-200g) do not last forever.
Mrs Un has just been forced to throw them out
After over 15 years in the bottom of the breadbin...
:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:Did they just slowly meld into one disc? That's what happened to a very ancient pack of "cook at home" prawn crackers I had, you could have used them as a doorstop .
I absolutely love scallops, they are one of my favourite seafood but they are pricey so a real treat. They need to be spanking fresh, not mucked about with and definitely not overcooked or else they are like rubber discs. That said the frozen ones are fine in a stir fry or chopped through a seafood rissotto but I'd not recommend trying those as your baseline and tbh with those ways they end up as just something vaguely fishy so you'd be as well off with a crab stick (nowt wrong with those IMHO;)). Oyster mushrooms do seem to be a favourite for a non-flesh alternative . Oysters cooked yes please, raw I'll pass thank you - it's a texture thing_pale_. Cooked fish stalls or fish men in pubs etc. don't really seem to be a thing here but I do love the small jars of cockles, whelks etc. you can get in SMs. Strange to think that until relatively recently shellfish was a "poor mans" food, probably because it could be foraged and didn't keep well where as now it's definitely expensive for half decent stuff.
I had vague notions of washing my windows as they are very manky:o but after cleaning the bathroom, hoovering and mopping the floors the "wonky donkey" was well and truly making his presence felt so they remain untouched. If it's dry & I feel like it I'll get them done tomorrow. Late afternoon I got an email from the lawyers they are just about ready to distribute my Dad's estate once I've checked and signed of various things. My printer has been in overdrive and I've been through it all so will post off tomorrow. I'll be glad when it's all settled and I can put my "responsible" hat away in a drawer.
Lunch was a wrap stuffed with LO stovies and grated cheese which was definitely in the " naughty but nice" category.:) I don't know that dinner will be that much healthier as I'm thinking that breaded spicy prawns & oven chips will be the main components though I will have some spinach & green beans with it. The pack of prawns although not OOD have been in the freezer since last Christmas:eek: after both I and my sis bought some so it's probably time they got used up. Though if I was truly :money:I'd just keep them for this year.:rotfl::rotfl:0 -
Cheeky chips from the kebab place for dinner! The queue was out the door as usual as it is very popular around here.
I got soaked on the way home as I didn't take my umbrella but it was worth it.:rotfl:
They are so generous there, I ordered one large portion for me and hubbie and it was loads!:cool:0 -
Sounds well worth getting soaked for Wednesday0

They were probably still okay to eat but the chemo police got to them first (well second, a family of moths seem to have got there first which is what got us to this anecdote). You could say they were an offering to Snibri - an obscure deity that John Peel & John Walters worshipped. The original deity was manifest as a demo tape that they somehow neglected to open and embarrassed by this fact they apparently placed the unopened package on a shelf above their desk where it remained for decades.
Those papad have moved house twice with us - gonna have to go and rescue them from the bin now and hide them again...

LOL unrecordings sometimes you just have to let things go:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
However, I can't preach as I know in my loft cupboard there are a box of "unbreakable" (and they've lived up to it) [STRIKE]truly hideous [/STRIKE] vibrant orangey brown tinted "duralex-style" small water glasses that were my parents that they [STRIKE]offloaded[/STRIKE] passed on when I first married that have survived numerous parties and at least three house moves and haven't been used since I moved here in 1991:o. They are so screamingly "1970s" that they are probably back in fashion now:rotfl::rotfl:. As kids we used to regularly test them by "accidently" [STRIKE]trying to smash them [/STRIKE] dropping them on the concrete kitchen floor while washing up they never even chipped :eek:.0 -
I'm another scallops lover, panned fried with crispy pancetta served with raw baby spinach and a light dressing  An occasional treat when on offer
I've only ever eaten smoked oysters from a tin and I can't remember where or why  I'm put off of raw ones not just by the texture but because several friends went down with food poison many years ago having decided to try them. Otherwise I'll eat most seafood it's my favourite
I have a really good food memory of eating a fantastic seafood and tomato 'stew' in a little place in Rome it was full of seafood and my first time eating razor clams
. I'll just wipe my drool
Farway I think for a change we sent the rain down to you? The local radio did say it was heading west rather than coming from there.
I'm definitely glad it's Friday, it's has seemed like a long week and my cold doesn't want to leave  let's just say it's definitely a head cold but not much of a cough so far which is good
I'm really cba food wise today so lunch was vegetable soup and for dinner I blitzed the remaining soup (so it was a different texture) and added some falafels from the freezer for protein. A lonely pack of c&o crisps finish my random dinner, at least it was a healthy soup

Turns out the packet that went in the bin was a second one, a mere ten years old maybe - meaning the original psycho bunny pack went in the bin about ten years ago. In further other news Mrs Un made a WI style Victoria Sponge (no cream) with help from YouTube - tastes just as good as my Gran's - happy days...

Snap, sort of, the HM veg soup I made last night from L's YS [20p] ready prepped veg has been maturing overnight so it's today's lunch & dinner
Nice & chunky at the moment but like you I may blitz the remainder just for a change
I have my mini pillow of meaty flavour crisps if needed;)Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
