    Hello,

want to open a current account to put in savings for our wedding. not sure it's worth opening an ISA or high interest account as we'll need regular access to the funds.

Is there a current account that offers good interest rates or an impressive incentive for opening an account with them - without having to get wages paid in?

    thanks:o
None of them, as far as I know, requires wages to be paid in. Most simply require at least a minimum amount of money to be paid in; this money can then be paid out again as quickly as you like.

If you want an "impressive" incentive, you have to switch, not just open.
  • Hi there,

Just a quickie.. Not sure if I'm being really stupid. When transferring the account is it all the accounts you have with that bank (so for me would be Halifax) or can you pick the account you want to switch from? I have two current accounts and one credit card with Halifax and I use one of the current accounts. Can I switch just the one that I don't use for the M&S account?

    Thanks!

    Kat

    Yes, you can.

Are you sure that M&S offer is still active?

You can just pick one. You don't need to switch them all.

Edit: Sorry for repeating grumbler, I was reading the whole thread and your post wasn't visible when I replied.

    Hi
I switched an old current account with £1 in it that I didn't use across to the Halifax Current Account (not the Reward A/c) a couple of months back. There's no minimum pay in required and no direct debits required. I was happy to receive the £100 switch incentive and don't use this account either. Does anyone know if there is a penalty if you then close this account within a few months? I can't see what's to stop me now switching this to the M&S current account and getting the £100 gift card incentive? Any issues with your credit score caused by this serial switching behaviour?

There is no penalty, but Halifax account is the one worth keeping because of the free fiver that you can get every month.

Thanks - but it's the basic currrent account not the Reward one - no fiver per month so no benefits in staying there that I can see.

Can you not try upgrading to Reaward?

I didn't want the Reward account. My 'proper' current account is Santander and that has all the direct debits / is where my salary goes. But I also had an unused additional current account with HSBC with nothing going in and no Dir Debits going out of it. So I got the £100 from switching to the basic Halifax account without having to pay anything in to it each month / have Dir Debits set up on it - but yes as you point out I don't get the £5 each month either. I'm really just switching a negligible amount of money between any banks' current accounts that will pay me £100 but don't require any minimum monthly pay in or Dir Debits. I think!
