  • I'm prepared to admit to a forum full of internet strangers who will no doubt hammer me into the ground that I made a school boy error and for that moment thought the interest per annum was the interest per month! _pale_

If only I had an accountant in the family.

    Oh wait, I do! :wall:

(top tip: don't post daft questions after only an hours kip, it makes you look really stupid!)

Possibly old news now, but only read this thread during an afternoon of 'phase 2' account opening.

Windows phone apps were mentioned a couple of pages back, with the lack of a First Direct one being cited as one of the reasons someone wanted to leave FD.

It's obviously upset FD as they now provide a windows app, along with ipod, android and blackberry.

Feeling a bit dim for not being able to work this one out myself...

I've just switched to a Bank of Scotland Classic Account with Vantage. (The switch went seamlessly, which was nice...)

When it says "no interest on balances over £5000", what happens if my balance does go over £5k? Do I receive 3% interest on the first £5k, and nothing on the amount over that; or do I get nothing at all?

I have just opened a Club Lloyds bank account and a Club Lloyds monthly saver.

How do I register for gross interest? Can I do it online via internet banking or do I have to call them?

    Many thanks.

Lloyds were the most non user friendly of all my accounts, when I went through this. No you cant do it on line , no they don't send a form out by default setting ,unlike some. After 20 mins playing around whilst logged into my online banking ,eventually found a link that sent me to a dot gov page . Download and print form R85 , take it to your local branch , ever so antiquated .

If they're like BoS then you can call them to register or fill in an R85.

    Hi Snapelover,

It's not possible to register through Internet Banking. If you give us a ring on either 01733 347 007 or 0845 3000 000, one of my colleagues can arrange that for you. Lines are open 24 hours a day.

    Thanks,

    Craig

    Hi
Following the article about top banks and cashback if you switch I decided I would switch to First Direct. I have recently changed my mortgage deal & know i have a good credit rating, no debt except a £50k mortgage, a credit card and overdraft that i dont use, a cash ISA of approx £6k. i earn around £30k and as i'd be paying in over £1k a month and transferring all Direct debits over i was sure i'd be accepted as I met all the criteria.
i filled out the online application to be rejected. I waited for this to be confirmed in the post & range first direct. they said being rejected had nothing to do with my credit rating and if it had i would have received a differently worded letter. the letter states that the reason is their internal scoring process which is commercially sensitive. they also confirmed that they do not know what their scoring process is but that existing customers applying are also being rejected.
has anyone else had similar issues? After the way they've treat a potential customer I wouldn't want to bank with them anyway, but interested if anyone else had similar problems?

I just had the same experience. I've been overdrawn for most of my adult life, and finally got back into credit leaving me able to finally switch accounts.

I'm a classic credit card tart, and have never been rejected for a credit card, in fact all my cards recently increased the limit, so I can only assume my credit score is pretty good.

In the morning I applied for a Nationwide account to switch our joint account too, no problems there. Then I applied for a First Direct account to switch my personal account to. I got rejected.

Just like you, I checked if it was to do with my credit score, maybe applying for two bank accounts so close together was a rookie error. But they said it was nothing to do with the credit score, I passed that, it was to do with their internal criteria, and they wouldn't explain to me what those criteria are.

It's really worrying, because I know of no reason why I might be rejected. So I wonder if I just filled something in wrong on the form, but they say I can't reapply for another 6 months. And without any further information, I might just make the same mistake again.

So frustrating. I don't think I'd touch them with a barge pole now either. But then, I do want to have a crack at their 6% savings account, so my wife may yet apply for her own account.

First Direct are known to be very selective about who they take on as customers.
