5 days on from applying HSBC can't tell me if the online application has even been received - that after over an hour on the phone and being cut off the first time. They suggested doing a phone application instead - that would take 90 minutes. Doesn't seem worth £175 to join such a shambles.

***update*** just got back from a branch where they sorted it out in minutes - note to banks - raise your game on phone support before closing more branches.

When we hear so much criticism of Brazil hacking down the rainforest it's nice to know one of our "leading" banks is doing its bit for the environment.

This is what I received from First Direct recently, telling me I have had NO overdraft charges!!

Why the hell the can't deliver this by email I fail to understand. Maybe they just don't like trees!

Its part of the charges they need to inform you about. HSBC sent me a wad of paper to say I dont have any charges, which was well maybe nice of them.

I do have my HSBC account set up to send me statements, maybe thats why it was in the post.

I have paperless statements and I get most correspondence like this by email - for FD I recently got all the info about reducing interest rates electronically. There's still some info they have to send out by post, but it might be worth looking into if you can go partially paperless if you still need access to monthly paper-based statements.

I have been on paperless with FD forever and a day. They still send me half a tree every time I open a new Regular Saver with them. I also got the charges summary Dewpoint did, through the snail mail.
  • It is no surprise to me that First Direct support the hacking down of Brazil's rain forest. :(

I gave up with First Direct as they wouldn't let me use Internet banking unless I *phoned them* for a password! When will banks realise telephone banking is not Internet banking?

  • I see the post above about bad phone support from HSBC. Just glad I haven't bothered to chase them for my telephone password. Apparently I need this to log into *Internet banking* ! ??

Presumably they want you to phone them so they can definitely verify it is you requesting it. You wouldn't appreciate it if I contacted them and asked for a password to your account and got access !
Thank you for reading this message.
  • Most banks send these passwords in the post.

Obviously FD is part of HSBC and have their own way of doing things. I wonder if their call centres are in India? ;)

FD call centres are in Leeds and Scotland (Glasgow, I believe).

What is the problem with ringing them?
