  • Hi all,

As a student a few years back - think it was something like 2000/2001 I worked as a Christmas temp/summer holiday job for Royal Mail. Work was fine - bit boring manual sorting - did 8 hr shifts and got about a hours break in all of that which they didn't deduct wages for (i.e. I still got 8 hours pay). There was also the opportunity to get extra hours quite often.

I also had another job at the time but they weren't bothered (as they didn't know!) but they were really strict that people had an 8hr break between shifts and wouldn't allow you to clock in if you didn't.

I actually didn't work for Royal Mail direct but for an agency and got paid about 50p an hour more for exactly the same work.

Not sure if that helps anyone or not and not sure if the system will be the same now but generally I found it to be an easy way to make money - I did the 6am - 2pm shift which gave me time to go xmas shopping in the afternoons but I saved a fortune on nights out as I was too tired!

I take it that you already work for Royal Mail.

  • I applied online for this a few weeks ago, had my interview 2/10 and have to say it was the strangest interview i've ever had. Basically if you turned up with the correct documents including a photocopy (if using your passport you need a copy of the front cover as well as your details page) you got a job. Everyone who walked through the door was given a job, i was asked nothing about myself, just had my documents checked and was asked if i wanted mon - fri or mon - sat. I was there less than 10mins.

I would certainly make sure you have filled all forms in properly including bank details as none of this is asked at the 'interview'

Same happened to me went to Leeds sorting office , i think honestly if you where breathing in the interview you had the job ! . 4 Royal mail staff did seperate interviews when lets face it it could have been done by one at most , then was ushered into an office with a guy with a laptop who hardly spoke who said name heres the hours read that etc etc and after reading it the pay was different as to what was advertized ( nothing new in this ) so i said ok but gave back word later . During the interview i asked what id be doing , the guy said oh dont worry the temps get all the sh*t jobs ! I thought great !

why not? its just casual xmas work.most likely you will be sorting mail into postcodes/areas
its what we call diversion work at xmas as its diverted from the mail centres to delivery offices.
mind numbingly boring but not hard. worst job is missadressed mail and trying to work out where somewhere is from a big list of places/postcodes.
and people wonder why cards dont get delivered

show a basic level of numeracy/literacy and a willingness to be flexible(trust me) and you will be fine
