We all want the best for our families.

    Agreed.

But the OP doesn't want what's best for his father, he wants what's best for himself.

Murder is 'worse' than burglary, but that doesn't make burglary acceptable, does it? Should we tell burglars that they might as well go ahead since there are worse things in the world?

That would depend whether the next tenant qualified, could afford it and how much of a conscience they had. But it's unlikely we'll ever find out, isn't it?

    Who says?

And that situation is unlikely to improve whilstever people shrug their shoulders and condone it's passing.

No one should 'benefit' from buying it. If someone living in a council house feels they can afford a mortgage or open market rental rates, then they should free up the property for someone else. If they can't, then they should just carry on as they are.

As for what happens to the property after the OP's father's death, surely you would agree that it ought to be made available to one of the thousands of families or vulnerable people currently stuck in hostels or B&Bs?

That's where you and I differ... it DOES make a difference to me.

Unfortuately for you while you are taking the 'high moral ground' thousands of others have taken the opportunity of owning their own homes at a very cheap price thereby creating personal wealth and more security for their families. I don't blame them one bit. Council rents may be cheaper than private rental but over a period of 40 years the council has made plenty, plus they then get a lump sum from the sale. The real problem is that the money the council makes/has isn't used to provide more social housing. Most people who criticise people for buying council houses are those who aren't in a position to get one themselves.

At least I don't have to rely on my father to provide an inheritance for MY kids

    Unfortunately for me, how, exactly?

I'm not in the position of needing council or any other social accommodation and therefore don't fall into your 'most people... blah blah blah' category. The reason it matters to me and that I care is that I have a conscience. If you want to call that the 'high moral ground' then go ahead.

I did get advice but I also got people like yourself offering their opinions on matters that went over and above what I asked.

Some people obviously think I have my own interests at stake here and that is your right. But do you honestly think if I did then I would take notice of your opinions?

I'm sure there will be a couple of posts after this probably because you must have the last word. Be my guest but I'm done here.

Thank you to everybody who took the opportunity to reply to my post and managed to keep their own personal opinions to themselves.

with that sort of attitude I'm not surprised that your missus walked out on you.
    dolce vita's stock reply templates

#1. The people that run these "sell your house and rent back" companies are generally lying thieves and are best avoided

#2. This time next year house prices in general will be lower than they are now

#3. Cheap houses are a good thing not a bad thing

Why do you assume this? Do you think everyone is out for themselves. Don't you think there are people that perhaps try and help other people?

Judging by your texts you appear to be very cynical and bitter, why is this?

Ha ha okay last post. Yes but it's never made me bitter like you! You obviously went in to my previous posts doing a bit of research. What a sad little person you are.

You can have the last word seeing as it means so much to you. :D

Opinions? On a public forum? Heaven forbid! What is the world coming to?!

I've formed that opinion based on YOUR own words.

Whether you take any notice is, in this context, irrelevant; you post on a public forum, members of the public read what you post, form an opinion and some post in reply. Job done. If your weren't taking any notice, why bother replying?

    Yeah, right!

Read that as 'Thank you to everyone who didn't challenge me or my self-serving narrow views of life'.

Here's why I thought you were out for yourself:

When he dies god forbid then the house he has lived in for over forty years goes back to the council. Only for some immigrant to bypass the queue and get the house!

He wants to leave something for his children.

I'd absolutely LOVE you to provide some evidence of this, other than the posts where I'm merely disagreeing with your plan.

  • Jees!!! Multiple quotes, highlighting in bold red and all on a Saturday night!!!!

You must be a woman or at least if your not then you must sit down to pee. I'd look over your old posts but to be honest I can't be arsed.

I'm off out. Enjoy your night/morning.
