  • It is easy to work out the cousin thing, if your mum or dad has a cousin they are their first cousin and your first cousin once removed. If they have a child they are your second cousin. The pattern just repeats.

My DH is very into genealogy so I've picked it up over the years. It sounds simple but took me a while to get my head round it. :o

I suppose if you've grown up with it it's second nature. It just seems obvious to me. I think a chart might make it easy? I have no idea how to draw a chart on line and I guess that seems easy to some :rotfl:If you put is all together we would make an awesome genius.
  • After a mad busy day it was great to pull the hair down and relax. Is Armageddon coming as some people are loosing all reason? (well it is a full moon!). I hate the pressure people put themselves under. Some of the best times have been over but then lets be honest it is their choice and decision.

I don't really understand disposable fashion. It takes ages to find something that fits, buy it and drive home. I expect it to last more than a wash or two. it costs more to buy cheap, quality pays for it self so much. I am too tired of wasted time and energy to buy cheap, that will not last. I have loads of clothes that are as good as the day i bought them over 10 years ago, mainly black dresses and blouses. I bought great brands often from ebay and they last. I have had skirts from primark and tesco that have not lasted a year. Trends come and go but if you invest in timeless pieces they pay for themselves.

I bought the qvc laura geller foundation powder and it is nice. However, over the catrice concealer and vichy foundation it makes it unmovable. I even slept in the make up and it was perfect still 24 hours later, I did give myself a no make up day for the remainder of the day.
  • Hello Ladies,

My younger son and I went to see the TV preview of the Mrs Brown's Boys Christmas and New Year specials. They were both extremely funny, so we both had a good evening at BFI Southbank. We were fortunate enough to get free tickets for this event. :D

I am just planning to have a relaxing day today.
  • Savingfortomorrow - I hate "disposable fashion" too and also expect to get a decent amount of wear out of my clothing. Part of the reason for dieting is I need to get back into clothing I've bought 20 years ago, even 30 years ago (yep...I usually buy pretty modern classic clothing).

I was shocked at a cheap teeshirt I bought recently going "bobbly" after only about 2-3 wears - and had to throw it out that fast. That came to a pretty dear "cost per wear". It cost me £5 in a sale - so that came to about £1.50 per wear.

Re another posters comment re maybe the low volume of goods sold at the moment is partly down to many of us have reached Peak Stuff. I've been thinking about that comment since and I know I've got some clothes I'm waiting to buy and I have a weakness for cookbooks (though, in my defence, I tend to change my way of eating every few years or so). Apart from those two things - I've very much reached Peak Stuff in a lot of respects. Counting out those clothes-to-come - and there are only two things on The List to buy now (ie both sets of curtains - main and "sheers" for the sitting room) and a garden revamp when I can afford it. That's it - the only items still to buy and it will basically be "replacement only" buying for the rest of my life.

One of the unexpected "side effects" of having Amazon there online these days I find is that, if I'm wondering about buying something-or-other then I look it up on Amazon and start reading the reviews. A couple of bad reviews later - eg saying "it didn't last long" etc - and I've changed my mind and decided not to buy it after all. So that's one thing less bought - as another customer has told me it's "not fit for purpose" and so I've avoided it.

Do you mean a relative of some description (if rather far removed)?

Poetry group Christmas lunch today and I am sporting long red nails!

For once I managed to paint both hands successfully, no splodges on the right hand. I only risked basecoat, a single coat of colour and then top coat.

I will wear my new grey jumper with little pearls and, for once, a pencil skirt.

  • polly I was looking at a jumper like that, I was a bit worried about the pearls coming off when it was washed. I'm a bit of a wuss. I did think it looked very elegant.

I don't buy many clothes, I know my style and stick to it so I've never been one for following trends, well not since I was about 16.

I like local sayings, wouldn't it be horrible if we were all clones with no local colour. I wouldn't worry about being laughed at, us Irish get laughed at all the time and the drunken Irish stereotype is very much with us. I'm very happy with my Irish passport, envied by several friends who wish they had the family connections to get one so this teetotaler isn't worried about the stereotypes.

One of the pearls came off last week when I wore it to dinner. My Clogau pendant was obviously rubbing against it.
